- Women in World History- Queens and leaders.
- Women rights in US-Brief-history- During the time of Revolutionary War, believed women did not have as big as brains.
- Early 19th Century- Unable to vote, not single could not own property, not initiate divorces, Legal status as a minor
- Cult of Domesticity- Developed through the 1800's. The ideal of perfect women has 4 characteristics:
Piety- Women had a natural inclination for religion. Modern young women was though of as a new "Eve" working with God to bring the world out of sin through her suffering, through her pure, and passionless love.
Purity- Purity was highly revered. Without sexual purity, a women was no women, rather a lower form of bring
Domesticity- Women's place was in the home. Women's role was to be busy at those morally uplifting tasks aimed at maintain and fulfilling her piety and purity.
Submissiveness- Most feminine of virtues. Men were supposed to be religious, although not generally. Men were supposed to be pure, although one could not really expect. Men never supposed to be submissive. Men were to be movers, and doers. Women were to be passive bystanders, submitting to fate to duty, to God, and to men.
- India still has major issues with gender roles-Rape in India.
- The push for Equality- 1848- Seneca Falls Declaration: Plea for the end of discrimination against women in all spheres of society, including the right to vote. Women in the mid-late 1800's and early 1900's pushed for four things: Abolition of slavery. Temperance. Women's suffrage. Child labor laws.
-Susan b. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton. Both furious that Congress had given the vote to black men but denied it to women.
- National American Women Suffrage Association: Led by Anthony and Stanton
- World War I- Interrupted the campaign for women suffrage/ Women took men's jobs in WWI showing the country that they could do hard work
- Jeannette Rankin- Worked to win in suffrage in Washington state, was elected first women in the congress in 1916, voted against war in WWI and WWII, the only vote.
- Aug 20, 1920-the 19th amendment
- Alice Paul- She was the head of the National Women's Party. Felt the 19th Amendment wasn't enough. pushed for equal rights amendment to be added to the constitution.
- Equal Rights Amendment- Introduced to Congress in 1923, made all forms of discrimination based on sex illegal, passed Congress in 1972, never got last 3 states so never ratified
- The Roaring 20's- The 1920's were a good decade for women's rights, 19th amendment, flapper girls, going to college more, working more outside the home.
- Margaret Sanger- Founded the American Birth Control League- in 192. Women were then able to control their own bodies, this movement educated women about existing birth control methods.
- Education- By 1928, women were earning 39% of the college degrees given in the United States. It has risen from the original 19%.
- 1928 Olympics, first Olympics that women were allowed to compete in.
- "Pink Collared" Jobs- 1920's-1970's: Gave women a taste of the work worlds, low paying service occupations. Made less money than men doing the sames jobs; secretaries, teachers, telephone operators, and nurses.
- Why do women get paid less than men? They stop/pause their career to have children more so than men. They do into job fields that typically pay less than the types of jobs men go into. Perhaps more aggressive asking for raises? unexplained..gender discrimination?? The average women loses more than $400,000 over her lifetime due to unequal pay practices
- What year do you think women will achieve equal pay with men in the US? 2058 or 43 years from now
- The pay gap has barely budged in a decade
- Women in every state experience the pay gap, but some states are worse than others
- The pay gap is worse for women of color
- Women face a pay gap in nearly every occupation
- The pay gap grows with age
- While more education is an effective tool for increasing earnings, it is not an effective tool agasint the gender pay gap.
- The pay gap alos exsits among women without children
Assigned Blog- Choose any women,event/law in history that has greatly impacted women in the US or around the world. 2. Research and write a blog entry on the impact that the women,events,law has had on women. 3. Give a good effort, include two pictures, and be sure to add your sources. 4. Due next Wednesday. 5. Current Events:
Plane crash-Spain to Germany- crashed in the French Alps. Say the co-pilot deliberately crashed the plane. The captain left the cock-pit for a little but could not then get back in. Still do not know for sure why he was to do this.
