Basic facts: axis powers, 56 billion dollars 2,120,000 military deaths
War Goals: Invade America - didn't work, to control rich countries that are rich in raw materials, needed to control the countries so they can be less dependent on foreign imports for national survival, to attack Pearl Harbor - to get US out of the war before they join
Events between WW1 and WW2: 1918 - Treaty of Versailles, Saionji Kinmochi sat with the 'Big Four', Got a permanent spot in League of Nations, Came out as a world power after WW1, Second Sino- Japanese War, Nanking Massacre, Japan took over Nanking over a 6-week period, mass murder and rape for 40,000 - 300,000 Chinese civilians, argued for being military purposes and not war crimes, National District of China (NDC), 295,525 deaths - 76% men, 22% women, 2% children
Homefront and Propaganda: Japan wanted to make America and most European countries look like imperialist and characterize white people as demons, drive out the white tyranny of England and America and create a New Order in Asia, they claim that they are spiritually and culturally superior to us......Women and children were ordered to work in factories as well as farms, people did whatever they could to get more resources and raw materials.
People: Yamamoto: admiral and commander-in-chief of the combined fleet, planned attack on Pearl Harbor, died when Americans broke flight plans and shot him down.
Hideki Tojo: Prime minister from 1941 - 1944, army general during the war, ordered attack on pearl harbor, resigned from position when Japan was losing the war, was killed for war crimes before resignation from military, right before he was killed, he shot himself in the chest.
Hirohito: Emperor of Japan during WW2, approved attack on pearl harbor, was not accused of war crimes after the war, became a symbol for the future of Japan
Major Battles: Pearl Harbor: Japan led a surprise attack on US forces stationed at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii December 7th 1941, about 350 Japanese torpedo bombers bombed most of the US Navy, over 2,000 were killed and over 1,000 were injured, 4 US ships were sunk, 4 more were completely destroyed, the rest damaged
Midway: Japan led and attack on the midway islands to further their control of the US, turning point in the war for us, Japan lost 4 carriers and one cruiser, 292 planes, 2,500 casualties
Okinawa: was the largest amphibious assault in the pacific, was the last and biggest of pacific battles, japan set up a large defensive line of pillboxes and strong points across the islands, 287,000 US and 130,000 Japanese soldiers were involved, 65,000 US casualties, 77,000 Japanese casualties, japan lost 2,800 aircraft a battleship, a light cruiser, and 4 destroyers, US lost 34 ships and 74 planes
Battle Strategies: Pear Harbor: wanted it so them and america could make a deal to stay out of the war, bombed US naval fleet
Midway: japan mostly offensive by attacking Hawaii and the Philippines until after the battle
Okinawa: strategy was purely defensive, they set up a large defensive lines across the island wanted to kill as many Americans as possible
Why they lost: Pearl Harbor attack, lacked on resources, pacific war a lot of resources used, called in the surrender
Impact: Potsdam Declaration, Japan's terms of surrender, restricting Japan's land to certain islands, completely disarming military to live peacefully, not enslave but still show stern war crime punishments, made into a democracy, allied troops were to stay until met requirements, occupation was divided between allies, became allies with the US

Who they all took over: Hong Kong, Thailand, British New Guinea, Philippines, Guam, East Indies, Portuguese Timor, Malaya, Wake Island, and Christmas Island
Areas Attacked but not Conquered: British Columbia, Colombo and Trinccomalee, Dornod, Santa Barbara, Pearl Harbor, Midway Atoll, Fort Stevens--Never moved into India
League of Nations condemned the action but could not enforce its authority as it had no military force, the message sent to aggressive countries was that a major power could get away with using force because Great Britain and France did not want war, Japan dropped out of the League of Nations shortly after the invasion
A mass killing of Chinese people (up to 300,000) Mass raping of Chinese women and girls, Mass looting and arson, Some in Japan have denied that the military killed civilians for no reason
Quarantine Speech 1937: cut it off, keep it in, never works,
Aggressive: Germany, Italy, and Japan
Panay Incident: American gunboat attacked on river in China by Japan, 3 US troops killed and 45 wounded, Japan said it was an accident and paid US money , worsened US Japanese relations
Pearl Harbor: Hideki Tojo, Emperor Hirohito - important people!! Admiral Yamamoto, (thought plan for Pearl Harbor was a bad idea),
We lost a lot of ships and a lot of planes: December 7, 1941 - Sunday morning, 3 attacks planned, only attacked twice.
US declared war on Japan the next day

Why did they attack Pearl Harbor?
Japan invaded French Indochina in 1940, we stopped trading with them
Japan signed the Soviet-Japanese neutrality pact in April 1941
Japan realized they needed US for trade
Japan knew that this plan was a huge risk, but thought that it was the only way to keep us out of the war
Plan backfired. Instead Japan "awoke a sleeping giant"
Backdoor to War conspiracy-
