- Japan
- 56 billion in 1945. 2,120,000 military deaths.
- War goals- were to invade America, but it didn’t work. To control rich countries that are rich in raw materials. Needed to control the countries so they could be less dependent on foreign imports for national survival.
- Major Events- Nanking Massacre- Japan took over Nanking over a 6 week period. A mass murder and rape for 40,000 Chinese civilians.
- Homefront- Japan wanted to make America and most Europe countries look like imperialist and characterize white people as demons.
- People/generals- Hirohito. Emperor of Japan during WWII. Approved of the attack on Pearl Harbor.
- Major Battles- Pearl Harbor also Midway. Midway Japan let an attack on the Midway Islands to further their control of the Pacific. It was a turning point in the war for us.
- Impact of WWII on Japan- Potsdam Declaration. Japans terms of surrender. Restricting Japan land to certain islands.

- Japan in the 1920’s: Joined the League of Nations, Singed the 4, 5, 9 power pact, signed the Kellogg-Briand Pact.
- The League of Nations condemned the action but could not enforce its authority as it had not military force.
- The message sent to aggressive countries was that a major power could get away with using force because Great Britain and France did not want war. Japan dropped out of the League of Nations shortly after invasion.
- Panay Incident December 1937- American gunboat attacked on the river in China by Japan.
- 3 US troops killed, 45 wounded. Japan said it was an accident and paid in US $$.
- Axis Powers- Germany, Italy.
- Hideki Tojo-Made the ultimate decision to make the Pearl Harbor attack. Tried to commit suicide. He was hanged.
- Emperor Hirohito- He made the okay to attack Pearl Harbor. Emperor of Japan. 1989.

- War Results: Japanese major victory. US declaration of war on Japan. Germany and Italy declare war on the US.

Why did Japan Attack Pearl Harbor? After Japan invaded French Indochina in 1940, stopped trading with Japan. Japan signed with Soviet-Japanese Neutrality Pact in April 1941 guaranteeing that Japan and USSR would not go to war. Japan realized that they needed our trade to be successful in the war.
Japan knew that this was a huge risk, but it was the only way to defeat US. The plan backfired, instead Japan “Woke a sleeping giant.”
FDR’s War Message- Pearl Harbor was not the only place attacked on December 7. Hong Kong, Guam, Wake Islands, Midway Island.
