Monday- Japan presentation 

war goals- invade America-didn't work

-to control countries that were rich in raw material-wanted to be less dependent on foreign imports for national survival 

Treaty of Versailles-Sat with the big four-permanent spot in League of Nations- came out as world power, but still felt not included/powerful (seen as second class) 

Event between WW1 and WWII- Second Sino-Japanese war-Nanking massacre-mass murder of Chinese civilians 

People/generals during WWII- Admiral and commander in chief of the combined fleet- Yamamoto- planned the Pearl Harbor attack 

- died when American broke flight plans and shot him down 

-Hideki Tojo- Prime minister from 1941 to 1944 

Ordered attack on pearl harbor- tried to commit suicide-didn't die-was killed for war crimes anyways 

-Hirohito-Emperor of Japan during WWII- was nt accused of war crimes after the war-approved attack on Pearl Harbor 

Major Battles - Pearl Harbor- Jaapan led a surprise attack on US forces stationed at Pearl Harbor 

- Hawaii, December 7th, 1941-  2,000 people killed 

Battle of Midway- led attack on the Midway Islands to further their control of the Pacific- turning point in the war for the US- deciphered their code 

Okinawa-largest amphibious assault in the pacific 

-Japan set up a large defensive line 

- After midway Japan became very defensive 

-why they lost- Pearl Harbor attack-lacking on resources- did not knock us out of the war-did the opposite 

-impact of WWII on Japan- Postdam Declaration- surrender- restricting Japan's land to certain islands- disarmed military- not enslave, but stll show stern war crime punishments 

Impact- made them a democracy- allied troops were to stay until met requirements 

Tuesday- Five countries Japan invaded - Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Philippines, Guam, India, Singapore, wake island, Christmas island 

attack but not conquer- British columbia, Broome (Western Australia) Darwin (Australia) Newcastle, Santa Barbra (California) Pearl Harbor (Hawaii) Fort Stevens (Oregon) 

Japan in the 1920's- Allies of the US- about to be taken over by other European powers-joined league of nations 

5 power pact- limit naval size 

9 power pact- Open door policy and guarantee Chinese independence 

-Broke all of those promises 

-invaded Manchuria-1931- had raw materials-japan needed them to help with their factories 

Japan Invasion of Manchuria- Condemned the action but could not enforce its authority as it had not military force

-Message sent to aggressive countries was that a major power could get away with using force because Great Britain and France did not want War 

-Japan dropped out of the League of Nations shortly after invasion 

China Incident- lost, didn't win, fought a two sided war 

Rape of Nanking- A mass killing/raping of Chinese women and girls- mass looting and arson-Some people of Japan denied that the military killed civilians for no reason 

Quarantine Speech-1937- Roosevelt saying we need to quarantine the aggressive countries of the world 

Panay Incident- American gunboat attacked on river in China by Japan-first aggressive incident between US and Japan 

December 7,1941- declared war on Japan December 8,1941- Pearl Harbor 

- They were concerned about the US getting in the war. They wanted us to sign a treaty with the US.  The plan was to demolish the Pacific fleet, but instead it woke a sleeping giant. 

Wednesday- 


-signed a non aggression pact between the Soviet Union. Did not want to fight a 3 sided war  

-Backdoor to War Conspiracy 

-congress declares war 

-attacked not only attacked pearl harbor but they also attacked Guam, Hong Kong, Wake Island, Midway Island, Philippine Islands 

Bataan Death March- Japanese forced Filipino and Americans were forced to walk from one camp to another- 650 Americans died 

-Japan was heavily bombarded during the war 

Battle of Midway- turning point in the war for the US 

-Mcarthy _ Vows to return to the Philippines  

-Iwo Jima- February-March 1945 

Thursday - 

March 12 - Japan Review and movie
Famous flag raising picture from Mt. Suribachi. 
Preparing for the Invasion of Japan- Operation Downfall. Estimated to have huge casualties. This didn't take place because the atomic bombs. 
Hiroshima (Little Boy) and Nagasaki (Fat Man) - Places that both got bombed in Japan. Japan didn't surrender. 
Japanese people were severely burnt by the atomic bomb. Radiation set in, people had radiation sickness. 
The war in Japan ended September 2, 1945. (VJ Day)
Potsdam Declaration- Dismantle the current government of Japan (excluding Emperor Hirohito). The Allies will occupy Japan. Japan will consist only of the major islands. It will lose all territory gained in WWII and years leading up to it. Japanese military forces will be disarmed and allowed to return home. There will be war crimes trials for the atrocities committed by Japan throughout WWII.
