Amendment 5 - no person shall be held to answer for a capital or otherwise infamous crime.

- Grants right to grand jury
- Protects against double jeopardy
- Protects against self-incrimination - don't have to say anything
- Cannot be deprived of life, liberty, or property without due process of law

Created to protect the basic rights of the accused - they didn't want to be like Britain

Amendment 6 - The accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial by an impartial jury of the state and district wherein the crime shall be committed.

- Right to a speedy trial
- Right to be notified of accusation
- Right to confront the accuser
- Right to obtain witness and retain counsel
Ratified December 15, 1971
Founding Father wanted the accused protected
Protects rights on trial from unfair prosecution and investigation

Amendment 7 - In suits at common law, where the value in controversy shall exceed twenty dollars, the right of trial by jury shall be preserved, and no fact tried by a jury, shall be otherwise reexamined in any court of the USA than according to the rules of the common law.

- You have the right to a trial and cannot charge and hold you without giving trial
King George III said no more trials or courts
Made to keep our court system fair
Ratified December 15, 1971

Amendment 8 - Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted.

- Fines must be fair and not over excessive and punishments must be fair, not cruel
- Innocent until proven guilty
Wanted punishments to be fair for people convicted of crime
No more hangings
Ratified December 15, 1971

Amendment 9 - The enumeration in the Constitution of certain rights shall not be denied

Amendment 10 - The powers not delegated by the constitution that the states have their own power

The people have rights
The state has rights and can make their own laws

Amendment 11 - Judicial Power of the US shall not e constituted to extend in any suits in other states

States can't sue other states
Countries can't sue single states
Exceptions
- Countries and cities - can sue/can be sued
- Waive
- Due process clause of the 14th Amendment - equal protection in the laws
- injunction - if the state goes against federal laws, can go to the Supreme Court

Amendment 12 - Election of the president and vice president by the electoral college

June 15, 1804 - Adopted
Presidents can pick their own vice president, instead of having president and vice president being mixed parties
If vote isn't majority, the House of Representatives would pick the president

Amendment 13 - Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude shall exist.

- Slavery is not legal unless it is for punishment or crime
- Ends slavery
Without it, we wouldn't have the same school
It helped the women's voting amendment
Mississippi didn't ratify this amendment until 2013 (it took 148 years)

Amendment 14 - All persons born or nationalized to the jurisdiction are citizens of the US and the states that they reside

- Anyone born in the US is a US citizen and has equal rights
- Known as the reconstruction amendments
Ratified July 28th, 1868

Amendment 15 - Prohibits the right to vote based on race, color, or previous condition of servitude

Prohibiting restrictions on voting rights on account of race, color, or previous accounts of servitude
Gave African Americans and slaves the right to not be denied to vote

Amendment 16 - The Congress shall have the power to lay and collect taxes and income from whatever sources derived, without apportionment among the several States, and without regard to any census or enumeration

- Government takes a portion of money you in any job that you do
- Established income taxes
Started to help in WW1(feed the troops, cloth them, and etc.)

Amendment 17 - The Senate of the US shall be comprised of 2 senators from each state

Each state gets 2 senators
Each state gets 1 vote

Wednesday - Turkey used to be a very dominant empire that had territories in most of the Middle East, Asia, and Europe.

Thursday -

There were many pictures of Osama Bin Laden found that are now able to be seem by the public
Went over stats of Ferguson since the recent stories in the news (looks like they target more African Americans than White people)
2 Police officers were shot after police chief resigned (neither was from Ferguson--shooter is unknown)
2 Secret Service men were drunk and crashed into the White House Barrier

Iran 101

Current leader is Ayatollah Ali Khameini (came to power in '89)
Former President was Mohmoud Ahmadinejad (nuclear weapons issue stated during his term "Holocaust never happened" "Israel should be wiped of the face of the map."
Current president is Hassan Rouhani (2013)- More moderate and brought "resurgence of hope" for change
- Helped initiate the first high-level talks with the U.S. in decades
- opened the country to some Western reporters but... Anatolia is in charge
Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty -1970 (countries agree to not make nuclear weapons)--North Korea, India, Pakistan and Israel [Iran] broke treaty
Nuclear Test Ban Treaty- 1963 (only underground test nuclear bomb)
Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty- 1996 (no test on any nuclear weapons--but never officially signed--just applied)
International Atomic Energy Agency- Watch dogs of nuclear weapons/ testing
Missile Defense System- 1980's (Shoot dummy missile at real missile aimed towards us (gets it off track)

Friday - Worked on the new Asian map (former Soviet Republics).
