Treaty of Versailles- start of World War 2, Land was taken from Germany(Alsace-Lorraine: given to France)(Eupen and Maledy: given to Belgium)(Northern Schleswig: given to Denmark)(Hutchinson: given to Czechoslovakia)(West Prussia, Posen and Upper Silesia: given to Poland). Military-Germany's army was reduced to 100,000 men, Germany army was not allowed tanks, Germany was not allowed to have an air force, Germany was allowed only 6 capital naval ships and no submarines. Rhineland was made into a demilitarized zone(DMZ), no German soldier or weapon was allowed into this zone, the allies were to keep an army of occupation on the west bank of the Rhine for 15 years. Financial-the loss of vital industrial territory would be a severe blow to Germany's economy, coal from the Saar and upper Silesia in particular, Germany had to pay $33 billion to the Allies(GB/France). General-Germany had to admit full responsibility for starting the war, Germany was forbidden to unite with Austria, A league of Nations was set up to keep world peace and order. Germany hated the Treaty because it was forced on to them to they had no choice but to sign it otherwise they would have to go back to war and they were not able to do that. Weimer Republic-new government in Germany after WW1, president was chose by the people every 7 years.
Tuesday-Hitler-born in 1889 in Austria, family moved to Germany when he was 3,his brother died in 1900, after his brother's death Hitler changed and became more moody and withdrawn, had more issues at school and with his dad, his dad died in 1903 and his mom died in 1907, all 3 of these deaths had a huge impact on him as longer, in Mein Kampf, Hitler said he first became anti-Semitic(hating Jews) during his time in Vienna Austria. Hitler struggled in school. When he was 16 he moved to Vienna Austria. Hitler failed to get into the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna 2 different times but he was rejected, he started selling paintings for money, moved to Germany to join the army during WW1 and he was accepted and it made him feel like he belonged. Hitler was wounded twice during WW1, injured by shell explosion and blinded by mustard gas attack, Hitler could have been shot in no mans land but the other man let him go. After WW1 he started spying on the National Socialist Party(Nazi)for the German military, Hitler quickly realized that this group discussed topics that he believed in, dropped out of the military and joined the Nazi Party and quickly rose to become the leader, found that he had the power of speech and persuasion during this time. Beer hall push- wanted Germany to join the Nazi's but it didn't work and he was thrown in prison. Hitler's trial-he was charged with treason but used his way of speaking to get out of it and was only given 5 years in prison but was let out in 9 months for good behavior. While he was in Prison he wrote Mien Kampf which was about his future plans for Germany. Hitler's rise to power- failed to over throw the government, appointed to chancellor, the great depression took place and the Nazi's became bigger, president Hindenburg died and the government burned down, he came to power legally because the president died. Hitler dropped out of the league of nations, started rearming Germany, rearms German Rhineland area.
Wednesday-Austria was basically at gun point and had to become part of Germany. Munich Conference-Neville Chamberlain(Great Britain), Adolf Hitler(Germany), Benito Mussolini(Italy), Edouard Daladier(France). Chamberlain-"peace for our time", Hitler was given the Sudetenland of Czechoslovakia, Hitler promised that he was done taking over territories, Hitler wanted to re-unite all German speaking people, Became known as the "Policy of Appeasement". Winston Churchill-opposed Appeasement and disagreed with Chamberlain. Hitler took over all of Czechoslovakia in 1939. Hitler was going to take over Czechoslovakia if the president didn't agree. People think Hitler is going to take over Poland next and then if he tries to do that then a war is going to start. Non-aggression Pact(August 1939)-Russia gave raw materials to Germany in exchange for money and weapons, both agreed to stay neutral if the other entered the war, Secretly agreed to invade and split Poland. Germany would get the western half and USSR the eastern half, Russia would get Finland, Estonia and Latvia and Germany would get Lithuania. Poland was stuck in a tight spot, Hitler thought Great Britain and France were going to back out. The Phony War-War has been declared but nothing happened because it was during the winter. Hitler had taken over Denmark, Norway, Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg and France.
Thursday-Maginot line-very strong and you can't get passed it, under ground. Didn't work because airplanes could get around it. France was taken over in 5-6 weeks. Miracle of Dunkirk-let thousands of soldiers back to Great Britain. There were 2 Frances in WW2. Vichy France(south France) were allies with Germany, the other France(free french) were allies with the U.S. Tripartite Pact- Japan, Italy, and Germany. In 1940 Great Britain was the only European country that wasn't taken over by any other country. Nazi Goals for the battle of Britain-destroy the Royal Air Force, attack and destroy the British Navy, attack British troops, once air control was gained the invasion of Great Britain would begin. *Germany never succeeded in achieved destroying the Royal Air Force **German bombers did so poorly against the RAF that they started bombing at night only. ***Great Britain was aided heavily by the radar and Ultra.
