Week of April 3-8

Monday-

9-11 and the US War on Terror

  • 1.3 million lives have been lost as of March 2015 as a result of the US War on Terror

  • Al qaeda was based in afghanistan- that is why we invaded them

Republicans- Afghanistan

  • Most everyone supported the War in Afghanistan due to 9-11

  • Afghanistan was not focused on as much after the Iraq invasion in 2003

  • Allowed Taliban and al- Qaeda to gain in power of the years

  • President Trump has stated might send more US troops to stop the increased violence

  • Has not officially announced plans as of 3-29-17

Democrats- Afghanistan

  • President Obama wanted to focus more on Afghanistan instead of the Iraq War- Sent 30,000 more troops 12-2009

  • Started US withdrawal from Afghanistan in July 2011

  • Hopes to be out of Afghanistan sometime in 2017 as of 10-15-15

Tuesday-

War in Iraq

  • Iraq invaded Kuwait

  • We protected Kuwait

  • Flew over no fly zones- zones where Iraq couldn’t have military

  • Weapon Inspectors- looked for nuclear weapons

Democrats:

  • Many favored Iraq War at first but criticized President Bush for messing it up

  • Wanted a defined exit strategy during the Bush years

  • President Obama withdrew all combat troops from Iraq in August 2010

  • All US forces were out of Iraq at the end of 2011

  • Left too soon? ISIS took over

Republicans:

  • Admitted to mistakes in Iraq and said it will be a tough fight

  • Hoped Iraq’s new gov’t and people would eventually be stable enough for US withdrawal

  • President Bush pulled 8,000 troops out in late 2008/early 2009

  • President Bush stated 8-21-06 that US would not leave Iraq “until the job is done”

Wednesday-

  • Pepsi’s new commercial is causing a lot of controversy

Thursday-

  • After US left Iraq in 2001, ISIS, formerly al-Qaeda in Iraq,moved in and has taken over much of Northern Iraq and Syria (2014- present)

  • Obama started a bombing campaign on ISIS targets in August 2014

  • Obama sent 1500 military advisors back in late 2014

  • Former Defence SEcretary Leon Panetta has criticized Obama for leaving Iraq too early

  • 75% of ISIS troops have been killed by US airstrikes as of 12-14-16

Friday-

  • Sent 50 airstrike missiles to Syria base that launched chemical attack

 

Week of March 28-31

Monday-

Democrats favor- gay rights and marriage are civil rights

Republicans oppose- marriage should be between a man and women/ religion

14th amendment- 5-4

Legalization of Marijuana

Why legalize?

  • Medicine

  • tax it (government will make money)

  • police officers won’t have to deal with it

  • Some scientists say it's not as bad as other drugs

Why keep it illegal?

  • More people smoking it

  • It's bad for you

Why legalize it for medical reasons?

  • Less addicting than opioids

  • Stops seizures

  • Takes pain away

Parties opinions

  • Many people from both parties still oppose the legalization of marijuana for recreational use

  • Democrats would be more likely to support

  • Legalization of marijuana for medicinal use is more widely supported

What amount of people in the US smoke pot

  • 7%

  • In 2011, more than 18 million Americans aged 12 and older reported using the drug within the past month

Tuesday-

Flag Burning

  • Flag burning is legal due to freedom of speech

  • Democrats- flag burning is a political speech and is protected by the constitution

  • Republican- Protect the flag from burning by the constitutional amendment

Wednesday-

  • Class Quiz

  • Went over Flag burning

Thursday-

  • Took the Asian map quiz

Friday-

Prayer in School

Democrats

  • Oppose/Violation of separation between church and state

  • Does not uphold “freedom of religion” if we have school sponsored prayer

Republicans

  • Favor/It is a religious right and our Christian heritage

Declared unconstitutional in 1962 in the case Engel vs. Vitale

Separation of Church and State

  • Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof…..” 1st Amendment

 

Week of March 20-24

Monday-

  • Went over current events on the news

  • Climate change

 

Monday-

Environment/Climate Change

Democrat

  • Strong regulations are needed to protect the environment

  • Believe climate change is occurring and problem is sped up by humans

  • Gov’t need to do more that helps slow down

Republican

  • Strong environmental laws harm the economy

  • Believe climate change is more of a natural phenomenon

Is the globe warming?

  • Yes

Is it man made?

  • Most scientists say yes

Is it a crisis?

  • Some say yes otherwise it would be too late, others say it's not serious and it's never going to happen

Can we do anything about it?

  • Be smart about pollution

Tuesday-

  • 97% of the Scientific Community- Observation throughout the world make it clear that climate change is occurring and rigorous scientific research demonstrates that the greenhouse gases emitted by human activity are the primary driver

Minimum Wage

  • Democrats- Favor/Increase the minimum wage to help workers

  • President obama's plant

  • Republican- Oppose/Do not raise the minimum wage because it hurts businesses

Wednesday-

  • Best year for minimum wage for 1969- almost $11 an hour

  • Australia has the highest minimum wage

Healthcare

  • Democrats- Government should allow universal access to healthcare

  • Republicans- Private insurers are preferable to government controlled system

Thursday-

  • Went over health care

  • Donald Trump's new healthcare plan

Friday-

  • Current events on the news

  • Powerpoint

 

March 6- 9

Monday-

  • Gun Control

Democrats:

  • Favor/Gun control is needed

  • Tougher background checks, ban assault weapons

Republicans:

  • Oppose/ Gun control is unconstitutional

  • 2nd Amendment- “Right to Bear Arms”

Tuesday-

  • More people die from gun suicides than gun homicides

  • In 2015 there were 247 mass shooting in 238 days

  • What can be done to stop gun violence?

  • Tougher gun laws

  • Background check

  • Mental stability check

  • Armed security guards in schools

  • Ban on semiautomatic weapons

  • President obama's biggest frustration “not being able to pass tougher gun laws”

  • Donald Trumps Gun plan

  • Protect the second amendment

  • Do a better job enforcing the laws currently in place

  • NRA- National Rifle Association

Wednesday-

  • Went over Trumps Gun plan again

  • Talked about gun control

Thursday-

  • Went over current events
