- Renaissance Spirit
- "Spirit" of adventure, curiosity, religion, and thrive to become rich drove Renaissance Men to start exploring
- Europeans had reached outside of Europe before
- Crusade starting in 1100 where European went to the Middle Eat to recapture the holy land
- Marco Pol in 1275 went to China to trade where he wrote about hi experience there
- Had a big impact on Columbus and other explorer
- Vikings
Why did exploration start?
- Money
- Wanted to find new and quicker trade routes to Asia
- Wanted pieces such a nutmeg, ginger, etc
- Overland trade was done between the Muslim in the Middle Eat and Italians
- Italian then charged higher prices to other European for these goods
- Other European traders from England, Spain, etc
- Wanted to find new and quicker trade routes to Asia
- To spread Christianity
- Many believed that they had a moral duty to Christianize non-believers around the world
- Bartolomeu Dias, a Portuguese explorer, said this about his motives for exploration:
- "TO serve God and His Majesty, to give light to those who were in darkness and to grow rich as all men desire to do."
