Winston Churchill- Worn into aristocratic family. Was rebellious child in school. Captured while reporting about a war in South Africa but escaped and traveled 300 miles to safe territory. Came to power- Joined Parliament in 1900. Appointed to the Prime Minister's Cabinet in 1908. Served in the British Army, Minister of Munitions. After Chamberlain's resignation, he was appointed Prime Minister and Minister of Defense. Lost power- Tried to create social reforms, but couldn't convince public. Was only seen as a wartime prime minister. Was defeated in the general election. Returned as prime minister. Knighted by Queen Elizabeth. Retired in 1955 because of bad health. Died at 90. 
Home front: The Home Guard. Women's Land Army. Under Attack. Air raid alerts. Never invaded by Nazi Germany. 
Major battle: Battle of Britain.
Important people: Alan Brooke- was a field Marshal and senior commander in the British Army. Clement Attlee- Was the Successor to Winston Churchill. Charles Portal- Marshal of the Royal Air Force. Chief of the Air Staff. 
Why the Allies Won WWII- Germany had major problems. They waited for British to surrender and attacked in August. British attack on Berlin, which led to the luftwaffe to change operations and planned for a massive attack on London. 

US
Major events- Everything was rationed. Thrusted into World War II. 
Leaders- FDR. Had polio. Died from stroke. Came to power- NY Senator. Elected Assistant Secretary of the Navy. Governor of NY. Lost power- Served 4 terms. Died while serving his 4th term. Harry S. Truman- Elected to the US Senate. Chosen to be Roosevelt's running mate. Took over when FDR died. "Worst president". 
Home Front- Everything rationed. Many women employed. Japanese Americans lost rights. 
Propaganda- Rosie the Riveter. Recruitment. Financing war effort. Resource conservation. 
Major battle strategies- Defeat Germany first, then Japan. Attack weakest points. Island hopping. 
Major Battles- The Philippines, Battle of the Coral Sea, Midway, Operation Torch, Battle of the Bulge, D-Day Invasion. 
Impact- 17 million new jobs. Federal powers increased, women worked, blacks were treated as second class citizens and given jobs. 

USSR
Basic Facts: Many casualties. Total cost- 1 trillion. Alliance- Germany, United States, Great Britain. 
Home front: Everyone involved, war on their territory, women worked, men fought. 
stalin: Russian revolution, general secretary of the central committee. Organized "Great Purge". Pact with Germany. 
Zhukov- Marshal of the Army. Soviet member of the Allied Control COuncil for Germany. 
Why they won: War/Battle strategies, big army, winter, allies. 
Impact: Most casualties. Rebuilt cities. Production went up.

Major powers: Great Britain, Soviet Union, US, China, and France.
