Douglas MacArthur
*Named commander of U.S. Army forces in the Far East. Led the U.S. against Japan in the Philippines. Given command of all army forces in the pacific.
Dwight Eisenhower
*Was called to Washington D.C. planning officer. Planned allied invasion of Nazi-occupied Europe.
George Patton
*Commanded US troops in the fight for North Africa. Led his army into Germany in early 1945, helping liberate the country from Nazi rule. Prepare the US 7th Army for the invasion of Sicily. Helped put the US forces on the offensive in Africa.
Phillip Johnston: Proposed the idea of using the Navajo language as a Navajo code. They change the code frequently, so the enemy can’t break it. One word can have up to 4 different meanings.
Chester Nez- Last remaining of original 29 Navajo talkers that could speak the code, passed away June, 4, 2014 at age 93.
Navajo Code Talkers- Code words were common to military terms: example: “submarine” became “iron fish” Used by the Marine Corps. 50,000 tribe members.
Impact on WWII had on the US
*17 trillion new jobs were created. Federal powers increased, so less power to state laws. Women worked. Blacks were treated as second class citizens. Blacks were also given jobs.
US Allied Powers- France, China, Soviet Union, Great Britain, United States.
Why we won WWII- we had a lot more allied powers.
US after WWII- US never signed the Treaty of Versailles.
Neutrality Act of 1935-Signed on August 31, 1935. It was designed to last six months.
Neutrality Act of 1936-Signed in February 1936. Renewed the provisions of the 1935 act for another 14 months.
Neutrality Act of 1937. Passed in May 1937. Set to expire after two years. This time it also included civil wars.
Selective Training and Service Act- Passed in September, 1940 and ended in 1947. Local drafts boards were set up from coast to coast. Each male registered was given a number between 1-7,836.

Before the end of the World War 2, Stalin, Churchill and Roosevelt met at Yalta, USSR to plan what should happen when the war ends. They agreed on:

- Germany to be divided into four zones
- Free elections allowed in the states of Eastern Europe.
