1. How did the Treaty of Versailles impact them?

France wanted to gain a sense of security from the Treaty of Versailles. They also wanted to get back Alsace-Lorraine that Germany took from them. They got a lot of land from Germany. France got a lot of money and German colonies in Africa.


2. What type(s) of government did this country have in the interwar years(1919-1938)?

In the 1930's like the ideas of Fascism and Communism. Leon Blum became Prime Minister in 1936. France mainly focused on their defense for the war. The Maginot Line was a wall meant to defend the French borders from Italy and Germany. The Free French underground was led by Charles de Gaulle. They were based in London because they were kicked out of France by the Nazi's. The Vishy Government that Hitler allowed to rule the southern part of France. The Vishy Governement was pro Nazi. Edward de Ladiea was the person that went to the Munich Republic.


3. How did their leader, that led them throughout WWII, come to power?

George Clemenceau was the man that went to the Signing of the Treaty of Versailles. Charles de Gaulle was a tank division commander. He became the president of France following the war.


4. How did this leader change their country(for the better and worse) prior to WWII?

They focused on defensive military strategies


5. What were the goals of the leader?

Charles de Gaulle wanted to free France from the Germans that took France from them. Prior to the war the wanted to stop war. The Vishy Republic wanted to help the Germans.


6. What was the military strategy of this country in the inter-war years(1919-1938)?

The Maginot Line was a concrete building that caused a barrier for the tanks to get around. They had Machine gun posts and artillery stored inside.


7. What role did they play in WWII?

Provided battlefields and developed their army on the border of Germany and waited for them to attack. The Free French underground fought against the Germans. The Vishy Government was allies with the Germans and Japanese. France was a headquarters for the Germans after they attacked.


8. Who were their allies in WWII?

Great Britain, United States, China, Soviet Union, Canada, Australia. Member of the Allied Powers.


9. How did WWII impact/effect the country?

After World War II about 350,000 French Soldiers were dead. They were in massive debt. They did not have a very strong military.
