Soviet Union:
Joseph Stalin- took control after a power struggle once Lenin died.
They dropped out of world war one and the communists take over. Dictatorship began. Purges and deportations to slave labor camps in Siberia. Strengthened the intelligence and the secret services. Created a "Cult of Personality" that intimidated people do what was told because he was seen as 'god like' and was feared. Nationalization and Collectivization of the Soviet economy. The government took over the businesses (nationalization) and farms (collectivization.) Industrialization of the Soviet economy. Five year plans. Taking steps to improve the economy every 5 years. Policies led to famine in Ukraine (5-10 million died- considered a genocide by some.) Banned Religion. Taken to prison/slave labor camps or put to death if you are found practicing a religion.
USSR in WW2- Signed German-Soviet Union Non-Aggression Pact in 1939 leading to the invasion of Poland.
Operation Barbarossa- Largest land conquering in history.
Battle of Berlin- April, 1945.
Post- WW2- Cold War: Took over all of eastern Europe. Continued to be their own country, however controlled by Soviet Union.
