Battle Strategies: Two per gun, cowards in their army would be killed, and they used snipers to take down the enemy from hiding spots.
Impact: Most casualties of the war, rebuilt cities, and production went up.
War goals: Rebuild everything, restart the economy, and throw Germans out of Soviet land.
Major battles: Kiev, Stalingrad, Soviet-Japanese War
Stalin: Power struggle, but Stalin won (after Lenin's death) and was in power by the late 1920's. Short, but respected.
Prior WWII: Russia dropped out of WWI to fight Bolshevik Revolution. Became communists and changed name to USSR. Purged military and government. Strengthened the intelligence and secret service. Created a "Cult of Personality" (egotistical and narcissistic). Nationalization and Collectivization of the Soviet economy. Industrialization of the Soviet economy. Five Year Plans. Policies led to famine in Ukraine. Banned religion.
In WWII: Germany and Russia signed a non-aggression pact. Also invaded Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Finland. Signed Neutrality Pact with Japan. Invaded by Germany in June. Stalin instituted his retreat and "scorched earth" policies. The Russian winter of 41-42 changed the tide of the war.
UK Notes:
Major events: Germany conquered most of Europe. including France. The only major country left to fight was Britian. Battle of Britain was when German bombed GB in order to try and destroy their air force and prepare for invasion. This battle took place on July 10, 1940. Lasted many months. Germany failed in their attempts to defeat Britains air force. It was Hitler's first major loss.
Basic facts: Allied with US, France, USSR, Brazil, Canada, China, and others. GB's leader was Winston Churchill. Prime Minister. Britain was the last country fighting against the Germans in Europe. British military casualties were about 700,000 and 60,000 civilian deaths.
Leaders: Neville chamberlain: Policy of Appeasement with Germany. Prime Minister until May 1940. Resigned after the Norwegian campaign. Seen was uninspiring war leader. Blamed for the loss of Norway to the Germans.
