Joseph Stalin- poor growing up, involved in Bolshevik revolution, Vladimir Lenin- Bolshevik leader became leader of soviets, and Stalin kept moving up in the ranks for communist party. WWII Stalin came to power, Lenin died in 1942, Stalin became leader after his death, wanted to be an industrial superpower, signed non-aggression pact with Hitler, Germany broke the pact, and Soviet Union became part of the allies’ powers. Came out of power when died from stroke in 1953, destalinization happened after his death, responsible for 20 million deaths.

Battle of Stalingrad, one of the bloodiest battles, bombarded the city and it was tough to battle in cities and it was a turning point. Battle of Berlin, red army breached, the end was in Europe, Berlin capital of Germany- were Hitler is. 173 000 deaths.
Back Home
Very poor, harsh discipline, people went hungry and it depended on farmers, needed a lot more than they had, tough because of the Germans invading. Cannibalism started.
Generals
Georgy Zhukov- captured Berlin, Stalin got very jealous of him, Boris Shaposhnikov- chief of general staff, main person who organized getting everything ready in case something happened and something did.
How the Soviets won
They won mostly because of the winter and just used it to their advantage, didn’t really need the allies with the winter, but without could not have did it without. Russia lost a lot but still came out on top.
Post War
Enormous loss of 40 million lives, mass shooting of civilians, famine and disease, and destalinization, and killing is not always the answer. Maybe stop killing so many people.

Stalin’s Policy’s Prior to WWII
Dropped out of WWI, comes to power and over the next 15 before war II, started doing purges, killed millions of people, deportation to slave labor camps, enhanced secret service to keep himself protected. He created a “Cult of Personality”- Statues, pictures of the leader, makes people remember who’s in charge, to keep people under control. Soviet Union was people owned then became everything government owned- Nationalization and Collectivization. Need to start building factories- 5 year have plans so every 5 years up their goals. Banned religion. Very strict.

Battle of Berlin
End of war, Germany surrenders, Hitler kills himself and the cold war started and the Soviet Union took over many of the areas, known as the eastern bloc countries.

Prior to WWII
Just out of WWI, GB and France don’t want war, Hitler takes over the Rhineland, Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain hands over the Sudetenland. Tried to give Hitler what he wants so he would go away but he didn’t go away only made him want more.

Winston Churchill- Born in a wealthy family, grew up in Dublin Ireland, performed poorly at first two schools, enrolled in Harrow Boarding School, eventually liked to start shooting and joined the Harrow Rifle Corps. Served in the army until 1899, he was a reporter close to the front line and wrote stuff down and brought it back to the leaders or generals. Worked as a war correspondent, became Member of Parliament, elected president of board of trade. Involved in politics until WWII, appointed prime minister in 1940, closely collaborated with FDR and Joseph Stalin for allied war strategy Worked on post war tactics, lost general election in 1945, continued to have impact on the world affaires
