Major Event:

  • started war with Poland and then Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Finland 
  • Peace treaty signed in 1921
  • Stalin takes over
  • Joined the league of nations
  • signed non aggression pact with Germany
  • later with japan
  • Germans failed to take over Stalingrad 

Deaths and Coasts:

  • more than any other countries
  • 11,000,000 Military 
  • 6,700,000 Civilian

Leader:

  • Main leader: Joesph Stalin: he grew up poor; in teenage age he started to believe in Karl Marx and Communism
  • Vladimir Lenin became leader of Soviets in 1917, died in 1924, that's when Stalin became leader
  • wanted to be an industrial super power
  • soviet union became part of allies 
  • died in 1953
  • de stalinzation: get rid of Stalin's methods 
  • responsible for 20 millions deaths 

Battle Strategies:

  • had a lot of people; even women
  • climate helped them; Germany wasn't prepared
  • they burned the fighting ground; that the supplies of the enemy got destroyed 

Hitlers plan:

  • tried to take over Soviet union: operation Barbarossa 
  • wanted to take over the 3 cities: Stalingrad, Leningrad, Moscow 
  • at the end they took the land back from Germany 
  • they lost (at the beginning) because they didn't had the technology 
  • ended up being a fail for the axis power

Siege of Leningrad:

  • September 8, 1943 
  • they surrounded the city
  • people died of starvation

Battle of Stalingrad:

  • Big turning point for Soviet Union
  • one of the bloodiest battles 

Battle of Berlin:

  • end of war in Europe
  • red army breached 

Back home:

  • really poor
  • harsh discipline
  • cannibalism stated 
  • was though because of the German Invasion 

Generals who impacted the War:

  • George Zhukov: led the red army; got popular, Stalin got jealous 
  • Boris shaposhinikav: planed the red army , organized 

Why the Soviet won:

  • because of the winter
  • Allies came to help (GB and France) 

Post war:

  • enormous loss of 40 million
  • mass shooting of civilians
  • famine and disease 

Stalin's Policy's Prior:

  • they doped out of WWI
  • purges and deportations to slave labor camps in Siberia, because of political opponent 
  • created a "cult of Personality": military all over the place, statues, pictures of the leader; makes people remember to make what they are supposed to do; have to love the leader 
  • Nationalization: government taking over peoples business
  • collectivization: government takes over farmers
  • -> many people were killed
  • industrialization; 5 year plans; want to improve every 5 years  
  • banned religion 

GREAT BRITAIN

Prior to WW2:

  • don't want war again
  • Hitler takes over the Rhineland
  • Minster Chamberlain hands over the Sudetenland  

Entering the war:

  • Made allies with Poland 
  • Great Britain and France declared war on Germany 9/9/39

Churchill:

  • Born into a wealthy family
  • grew up in Dublin, Ireland
  • wasn't good in school
  • served in the army
  • Became member of Parliament in 1900 
  • Served in WWI after Gallipoli failure
  • collaborated with FDR and Joseph Stalin
  • lost general election in July 1945
