Nazi- Soviet Non-Aggression Pact
- Russia gave Germany money and weapons
- Both Agreed to stay neutral
- Very weird because they hated each other
  - Got Poland Scared (in between them)
  - Hitler knew it would make GB and France from declaring war
Germany Invasion of Poland-Blitzkrieg
- Both Germany and Russia invaded from opposite ends
- Fast attack (Lightning)
  - Airplanes- Bombing Military bases, communication, transportation (Overwhelm people--- Luftwaffe)

Tuesday- Notes

1942- Most of Europe was taken over by Germany
- Ireland, Switzerland, Sweden were all neutral
- Great Britain was all alone- not neutral and against Germany
Nazi Goal for the Battle of Britain
- Bombing Campaign
  - 1.) Destroy the Royal Air Force (Great Britain)
  - 2.) Attack and destroy the British Navy
  - 3.) Attack British Troops
  - 4.) Once air control was gained, the invasion of Great Britain would begin
    - Didn't achieve number 1
    - German bombers did bad against the air force- bombing only at night
    - Great Britain was aided heavily by the radar and Ultra
    - Operation Sea Lion----name of this operation
Air Raid Shelters
- Basements, subway tunnels
- Nightly occurrence for about 10 months
Results
- 1941, Germany tried to attack British ships instead
- Germany lost a lot of aircraft
- Britain won by fault because Germany didn't take them over and British didn't surrender

- Hitler gets "bored"
- Starts to move east and invade eastern countries
- Operation Barbarossa
  - Code name for invasion of Russia
    - Moscow, Stalingrad, Leningrad
    - Biggest mistake of WWII
Battle of Moscow
- Soviets start counter attack
- Germans started to get stretched out
- "Russian Winter" Germany didn't have proper supplies
  - NEVER GOT TO MOSCOW OFFICIALLY
Battle of Stalingrad
- Over a million deaths on both sides
- City fighting
- Germany had 90% of cities
- Russians would die a country hero or be killed a traitor

- Starved the cities
- half a million people died from starvation

Wednesday- Notes

D-Day
- "Operation Overlord"
- Jun 6, 1944
- D- The DAY everything went down
- British, England, and Canada invade France
- Hitler had control of France at this time-----Omaha Beach was the toughest place to fight
  - Month after D-Day everyone knew that Germany was going to lose
- Liberation of Paris:
- Freed 2 1/2 months after D-Day
Battle of the Bulge
- Last chance for Hitler to win the war (if at all possible)
- Germany launched a huge attack to the coast of Europe
  - Caused many unnecessary deaths
- Russian and US solders met and were happy
- Hitler commits suicide April 30, 1945
  - In his bunker- both him and he and his wife died days after their wedding
V-E Day
- Victory in Europe

- six million European Jews
- 66% of Jews were killed in Europe
- Systematic way to kill a bunch of people

Lebensborn
- Promote the growth of Superior Aryan race
- Blond hair blue eyed women having children with "perfect" Aryan Soldiers
Hitler's Jewish Question- 1933
- Nazis "temporarily" suspended civil liberties for all citizens
- Set up the first concentration camp at Dachau in 1933
  - First inmates were 200 Communists
- Jews were prohibited from working as civil servants (government jobs--- influential jobs like doctors and teachers)
- Jews were banned from school
1935- Nuremberg Laws
- 1) Took away German citizenship form Jews and made them second class (couldn't vote, go to court)
- 2) Defined who or what Jews were (At least one Jewish grandparent was at risk in Germany
- 3) Jews could only marry Jews
- 4) No sexual relations between Germans and Jews
1936
- Nazis boycott Jewish- Owned businesses
1938- Kristallnacht
- "Night of the Broken Glass"
  - Broke windows, homes and burned synagogues and looting
  - 101 synagogues were destroyed and 7,500 businesses were destroyed
  - 26,000 Jews were arrested and sent to concentration camps
  - 91 Beaten and died in the attack
  - Officially expelled from public schools
  - Nazis take over Jewish-owned businesses
Hitler's Final Solution
- Genocide
  - a) killing of members of a group
  - b) causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group
  - c) preventing births within the group
  - d) Transferring children of the group to another group
1939
- Hitler orders systematic murder of the mentally and physically disabled in Germany and Austria
