Monday- verbal review of our choice of World War 2 movies. Hitler always wanted to attack Great Britain but he never did because he couldn't take over the air or sea. Without the British airline pilots Great Britain would have gone down.

Tuesday-May 1941, Germany decided to focus on attacking British ships and ports and this stopped attacking cities. British losses-around 40,000 civilians dead and 46,000-139,000 injured. German losses-3,363 aircrew and 2,265 aircraft. Britain won by the fact that Germany didn't achieve their goals. German invasion of USSR- final plan for Operation Barbarossa. Scorched Earth Policy-Burned resources, Stalin demanded this of the Soviet t2,5-roops as they retreated.Battle of Moscow-The soviet Winter Counteroffensive December 6,1941-April 30, 1942, the Russian winter sets in and make it a huge turning point in the war. Soviets had better uniforms than the Germans. Battle of Stalingrad:August 1942-September 1943, one of the deadliest wars. Stalin order the men to never retreat because he would kill them because he would see them as a traitor to their country. The Soviet won the war. Biggest defeat to the German army. Siege of Leningrad-On August 30th 1941, the Germans took over Leningrad's railroads, cutting them off from the rest of Russia and the world, unlike the Battle of Stalingrad the Germans surrounded the city to starve the city into submission, between November 1941 and October 1942, 641,000 people died of starvation, people resorted to eating rats, wallpaper paste and some became cannibals, a successful Russian counter-offensive at Stalingrad forced to move troops there and eventually, the siege failed. 

Wednesday-North Africa Campaign-General Bernard Montgomery("Monty"), General Erwin Rommel ('the dessert fox"- he was very sneaky). America gets involved with the war in 1942- U.S. and British forces invade North Africa, by May 1943 Axis Forces surrendered in North Africa, the campaign would now shift to the islands in the Mediterranean Sea and Italy. Operation torch was the plan for the invasion of North Africa. The Atlantic wall- a way to keep people from invading on D-Day. Couple attempts of assassinating Hitler. 4 years later Paris was liberated. Battle of the Bulge-Germany lost the war but the U.S. and Germany both had lost a lot of troops. U.S. and Russian Soldiers meet at the Elbe River(in Germany)- was a good day but later we were against them. Hitler commits suicide-April 30th 1945. Germany surrenders to Europe May 8th 1945. 

Thursday-The Holocaust-The genocide of approximately 6 million European Jews during WW2, a program of systematic state-sponsored extermination by Nazi Germany throughout Nazi-occupied territory, 2 thirds of the population of 9 million Jews who had lived in Europe before the Holocaust, some say the definition of the Holocaust should also include the Nazi's killing millions of people in other groups from Germany and other occupied territory, by this definition the total number of Holocaust victims would be between 11 million and 17 million people. Genocide-mass killing of a specific group of people.  Would do very bad things to women. Aryan Race-Blond hair, blue eyes, tall and muscular, master race. Inferior according to Hitler-Jews(6 million), Gypsies(500,000-1.5 million), Mentally/physically handicapped people(75,000-250,000), Soviet Slavs/Pow's/troops(16.5 million), Poles(2.5 million), Homosexuals(5-15 thousand), Communists/socialists(number unconfirmed), dark skinned(death and forces sterilization), Mixed races(Hitler said they were raped or that they were a whore), Jehovah's witnesses(2,500-5,000). Lebensborn(Fount of life)-Aimed to promote Aryan populations by providing excellent health care and living conditions to women and by restricting access to those deemed "fit", houses were set up throughout Germany and  many occupied territories, many lebensborn children were born to unwed mothers which helped lead to many rumors of rape, contrary to widespread rumors, women were not forced to have relations with Aryan Germans. Hitlers Jewish Question-Nazi's "temporarily" suspend civil liberties for all citizens in 1933-never restored, the Nazi's set up the first concentration camp at Dachau in 1933, Jews were prohibited from working as civil servants, doctors in the National Health Service, and teachers in public high schools, Jewish students were  banned from going to public high school and colleges. To strip away their future.

Friday-Nuremberg Laws(1935)-took away German citizenship from Jews making them second class by removing their basic civil rights, If you had 1 Jewish grandparent you were Jewish, Jews could only marry Jews, No sexual relations between non-Jewish Germans and Jews. 1936-Nazi's boycott Jewish-owned businesses. Kristallnacht(1938)-Nazi's started destroying everything that was owned by Jews, some were physically attacked and beaten.  1939-Hitler orders the systematic murder of the mentally and physically disabled in Germany and Austria, Jews are required to wear armbands of yellow stars. 1940-Nazi's begin deporting German Jews to Poland, Jews are forced into ghettos, Nazi's begin the first mass murder of Jews in Poland. 1941-more ghettos and more death camps, death camp in Poland started murdering Jews.  1942-Nazi's officials announce"Final Solution"-their plan to kill all European Jews, 5 death camps begin, Ghetto's are emptied and sent to death camps, The United States Great Britain and the Soviet Union acknowledge that Germans are exterminating the Jews of Europe. 1943-Jews in the Warsaw Ghetto resist as the Nazi's begin new rounds of deportations these Jews hold out for nearly a month before the Nazi's put down the uprising. 1944-Hitler takes over Hungary and begins deporting 12,000 Jews. 1945-Hitler is defeated and World War 2 is over, the Holocaust is over and the death camps are found emptied, many survivors are placed in displaced persons camps until they find a country willing to accept them. After the war they put the survivors into displaced persons camps, 850,000 people were in the camps. 1947-The United Nations established a Jewish homeland in British controlled Palestine, which becomes the State of Israel in 1948. Benito Mussolini-stabbed 2 people and wanted to be a school teacher. Italy wasn't very strong didn't really help Germany.
