March 10th-13th

Monday 9th: I was absent this day.

Notes

Tuesday 10th:

Japan.

*Areas that they attacked but never conquered:

-Air raids on Australia.

-British Columbia. (Canada)

-Kohima and Manipar. (India)

-Colombo and Trincomalee. (Sri Lanka)

-United States. (California, Pearl Harbor; Hawaii, Fort Stevens; Oregon, Midway Atoll.)

*Japan in the 1920's

-Joined the League of Nations.

-Outlaw war in 1928.

-Signed the 4, 5, &9 Power Pacts and the Kellogg-Briand Pact.

*Invasion of Manchuria in 1931: Japan was cut off by US tariffs and could not trade anymore. They were in major need of raw materials like oil, coal, &iron-ore. Manchuria was abundant in these goods. Japan decided to invade Manchuria and were successful. The League of Nations didn't condone this but also didn't have much to do about it. Japan drops out of the League of Nations shortly after the invasion.

*Nanking-Late 1937/ Early 1938: A mass killing of Chinese people. (300,000) Mass raping of Chinese women. Mass looting and arson. Denial of the murder of innocent civilians. Japan was charged with war crimes afterwards.

*Quarantine Speech-1937: Roosevelt pushes that peaceful nations needed to come together to push to quarantine the aggressive countries. (Japan, China, Germany implied)

*Panay-1937: American gunboat attacked in China by Japan. 3 killed, 45 wounded. Japan claimed that this was an accident and apologized for the attack however, this worsened our relationship with them.

*Pearl Harbor: Japanese leaders were Hideki Tojo & Emperor Hirohito, Admiral Yamamoto was also a leader involved for coming up with the attack plan. (though he advised against using it) December 3, 1941. Japan had 3 attacks planned but only followed through with 2 of them. They sunk battle ships and airplanes, but did not destroy our entire war supply. "They awoke a sleeping giant" Japan attacks on December 7th, (A date that will live in infamy.) US declares war on Japan December 8th, Germany & Italy declared war on the US, US declares war on Germany & Italy. Japan attacked the US trying to end the war by hitting us hard by surprise. They realized that they needed US trade to be successful. They knew this plan was a huge risk for them, however they also knew that this was their only chance to defeat us.

Wednesday 11th:

*FDR's War Message: Pearl Harbor was not the only place that Japan attacked in US. "Japan also attacked Malaya, Hong Kong, Guam, Philippine Islands, Wake Island, Midway Island."

*The Bataan Death March was when Japan forced American soldiers to march from one prisoner camp to another in the Philippines. There were many deaths along the way.

*Doolittle's Raid on April, 1942 was used to help increase moral in the US. The bombing from aircraft carriers was somewhat of a suicide mission and wasn't used to try to defeat, but rather show that we were fighting back.

*The Battle of Coral Sea in May was a minor turning point towards the defeat of Japan. This battle was done completely by ships.

*Afterwards, The Battle of Midway in June was a major turning point of the war. Japan hadn't succeeded very much after the Coral Sea battle, and by winning these battles Japan was never able to continue gaining grounds.  These battles both took place on many islands hardly consisting of anything more than a flight runway.

*March of 1945 was the Battle of Iwo-Jima. Japanese had literally buried themselves underground into the island to wait so that American soldiers felt secure, so that they could attack then. This led to many casualties for the Japanese. 'The Raising Flag' image from this battle became an important symbol of pride for America.

*Battle of Okinawa April-June, 1945.

*June, 1945 Preparing for Japanese invasion: Operation Downfall. Planned for October. This never took place, however.

Thursday 12th:

*June, 1945 never took place, due to the atomic bombing in July of 45. (The Manhattan Project.) The test bomb, (first ever atomic weapon used in history) was dropped on  July 16, 1945 from the Engola Gay. (B29 Super Fortes) This was a plane designed just for dropping these bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

*VJ Day was in August (UK) /September (US) of 1945.

*The Potsdam Conference of 1945: On July 26th Japan signed the Declaration stating "We will not deviate from them. There are no alternatives." The current Japanese government was completely dismantled. US occupied Japan. They lose all territory gained in WW2 and years leading up to it. Their military was disarmed and allowed to be sent home. There were war crime trails held for the mass killing, raping and looting during WW2 by Japan. Democracy was promoted as well as Freedom of speech, religion and protection of human rights. Japan was allowed industries and eventually trade. US occupation ended once they accomplished everything stated in the declaration. (7 years later)

Friday 13th:
