Lyndon Johnson

*Mr. Bruns this is the second time that I have posted this blog that is why it is a week late. It seems that the last several blogs that I ahve been posting get deleted shortly after being posted I am just owndering if I should contact ning about it or just keep on doing what I am doing and hold out until school's out.

Lyndon Baines Johnson was born on August 27, 1907 in Texas. When he was born his grandmother predicted that he would grow up to become a United States Senator. Johnson’s family moved to the nearby town of Johnson which his ancestors had founded.

Lyndon was a very bright boy who loved to attend school. After high school however, Lyndon moved to California for a few years and worked odd jobs. He was an elevator operator. He also worked in a road construction gang. After a few years, Lyndon felt that he needed more in life. He enrolled at a Teachers college in Texas.

During this time, Lyndon felt empathy for the poor migrant workers and farmers that he often worked with and wanted to help end poverty for all Americans. Around 1931, after being a decorated teacher, Lyndon was asked by Richard Kleberg, a Congressman, to be his secretary in Washington. For three years Lyndon learned the ways of congress.

Lyndon then met Claudia Taylor. Within a few short months the two were happily married. Lyndon ran for election in a House of Representatives campaign against 9 other candidates and won. He was especially favored by Roosevelt and succeeded in gaining some high privileges and opportunities.

Lyndon served as a Lieutenant Commander in the Navy in WW2 and won a Silver Star. Lyndon was later elected into the Senate to become the youngest minority leader ever. The democrats then won control of the House and he became the youngest majority leader in our nation’s history.

Lyndon Johnson ran as John F. Kennedy’s running mate and was elected as vice president in 1960. Here is a list of the newfound power and influence that Lyndon now had:

January 20, was administered the oath of office as Vice President of the United States by the Speaker of the House of Representatives Sam Rayburn. As Vice President, Johnson was a member of the Cabinet and the National Security Council, Chairman of the National Aeronautics and Space Council, Chairman of the President's Committee on Equal Employment Opportunity, and Chairman of the Peace Corps Advisory Council.

Lyndon Johnson was responsible for advising Kennedy that it would be very feasibly possible to land a man on the moon and return him safely back to Earth before the end of the decade.

Lyndon Johnson was then sworn in as the 36th president of the United States of America after the devastating assassination of John Fitzgerald Kennedy. There is a conspiracy against Johnson as to being behind the assassination. It has been speculated that Johnson was angry at Kennedy for a deal that Kennedy made that would greatly affect oil companies (at least that is what I think it was about). Johnson’s Mistress, Madeleine Brown is said to have witnessed secret meeting that were held by Johnson, oil tycoons, mobsters, including Jack Ruby, and other influential people including the head of the FBI.

However, Johnson was sworn in as president and did many great things for the country.

“The Great Society program became Johnson's agenda for Congress in January 1965: aid to education, attack on disease, Medicare, urban renewal, beautification, conservation, development of depressed regions, a wide-scale fight against poverty, control and prevention of crime and delinquency, removal of obstacles to the right to vote. Congress, at times augmenting or amending, rapidly enacted Johnson's recommendations. Millions of elderly people found succor through the 1965 Medicare amendment to the Social Security Act.”

Johnson was a huge supporter of Civil Rights and fought hard to end segregation. He did what he could to end rioting in large cities after the assiniation of Martin Luther King Jr. The picture above shows the two great advocates of peace in what looks like a boring meeting.

Johnson also helped NASA with major developments with proper funding and research. The country and the rest of the world were very pleased with Lyndon. It seemed that Lyndon’s purpose in life was to help others who could not help themselves.

Johnson was known for his fight against communism and aggressive movement by communists. Vietnam began under Johnson’s presidency and he did his best to negotiate peace between North and South Vietnam. Johnson could have won a landslide victory if he ran for reelection, but he shocked the country and the rest of the world by Not running. He wanted to spend the rest of his time fighting for peace and to be unhindered by politics.

Lyndon Baines Johnson died on January 22, 1973 on his ranch in Texas. Johnson will always be known as a great president who championed to fight for peoples rights and success. Despite evidence that suggests that Lyndon was behind the JFK assassination, I think that Lyndon was perhaps one the the best presidents to serve our country. Though I do not remember his reign, from what I have learned, he was a good man with a good cause.
