Lynching in the United States

Lynching was the act of killing people by extrajudicial mob action, mainly starting in the 1700's, and lasting until around 1950. Most of the time lynching consisted of a hanging, but it also included burning and other types of torture. The lynchers, who I would refer to as murderers, were rarely ever punished for their actions. Most of the time they weren't even taken under arrest. In the time period from 1882-1968, the Tuskagee institute recorded that there were 3,437 deaths of African Americans due to lynching, and there were 1,293 deaths of whites due to lynchings. Most of these lynchings occured between Reconstruction and 1960 in the south. Some lynching photos were made into post cards to show the dominance that whites had over blacks. I honestly think that that is a horrible thing to do, but made sense that people would do that during this period of extreme segregation. I am glad to know that today we live in a country that no matter what race you are you can be treated equally as a U.S. citizen.I decided to do some research into more individual lynching cases. In 1930, a mob of 10,000 white people took two young black males accused of raping a white girl to the county jailhouse by force. One black male was saved from the lynching for the girl's uncle said he was innocent.Below is the apparently famous picture from this event. It was the only case I could find online. I found that odd considering there have been so many cases in the United States, which is very unfortunate. I think it is horrible that there was a point in history that doing things like this to people was legal. If someone did this today it would be classified as murder, and they would be severely punished. I guess that is why they say we learn from history. I am guessing that if lynching and other types of murder did not occur that often back then, we would have never made it a law today. Even though it is now against the law, people still do it. Back then people who murdered or lynched other people were probably not thought of as poorly as they are today. People who do things like that today are thought as of sick and twisted people most of the time.

  • Maybe there is only this case because of the controversy surrounding lynching? I doubt that as there are many other disgusting things you can find online.
