First of all the definition of a failed state is: a state that can no longer perform its basic security, and development functions and that has no effective control over its territory and borders. It is basically anarchy.
My summary is of the first article,Failing Nations: why things fall apart. According to this article tons of things can cause a country to fail, things such as the geographical location, the size, the economy and the land, and the leadership. The article then goes on to talk about how we, the united states that is, expect many countries to follow our path and become like us quickly and peacefully, even though our own country only became what it is through several wars. I think the best point in the article was that we cannot truly determine or judge a country as a truly failed state until the country has truly failed. I personally like that last statement because it is simply the truth.
Now here's the summary of Shattered Somalia. This article basically tells about the state of Somalia's capital and how dangerous it is. It also tells about how there are many families with no decent homes. It also tells about how teenagers are joining the terrorist group Al-shabaab. I thought that this article was really informative. I really thing its sad and kind of scary that teens are joining those groups because thats the only way they feel like they're doing something that gives them respect and power.
