Watergate

Five men were arrested for breaking into the Democratic National Committee headquarters on June 17, 1972. These men were Virgilio González, Bernard Barker, James W. McCord Jr., Eugenio Martínez, and Frank Sturgis. The men had been charged with attempted burglary and interception of telephone and other communications. John Mitchell denied any link to the operation what so ever. They called this the Watergate Scandal because it was at the Watergate complex. A $25,000 check earmarked for the Nixon campaign was found in the bank account of a Watergate burglar. The FBI establish that the Watergate break-in was a part of political spying and sabotage on the Nixon reelection. There was tapes found that President Nixon had recorded, seemed to be that he was trying to cover up the break in. He refused to have them released to anyone under no circumstances. John Dean told investigators that he discussed the cover-up with Nixon close to 35 times. Shortly after Nixon disconnected the taping systems in the White House. Nixon resigned as President on August 9, 1974 after facing many court battles about these tapes and really lived up to his nick name "Tricky Dick."

Persian Gulf War(1990-91)

The Persian Gulf War (the Desert Storm). Saddam Hussein from Iraq invaded Kuwait. He thought Kuwait had over produced oil when all the prices were low. Hussein claimed that Kuwait was illegally pumping oil from Iraq as well. If Saddam didn’t stop what he was doing, the United Nations would attack, and he obviously refused to cooperate. The United States were protecting the oil fields in Saudi Arabia. Saddam fired missiles on the U.S. in Saudi Arabia to try to stop what was going on against him. On January 18, 1991, Desert Storm begins. Saddam set fire to the oil fields in Kuwait, which the U.S. did not like very much at all. The U.S. tried to liberate Kuwait but all the damage was pretty much already done. There was an assassination attempt on Bush, which I did not know of until doing this research, and Saddam was still on the United Nations bad side.

9-11 and the War on Terror- invasion of Afghanistan

In 1995-96, one and two years after I was born (:, the Afghanistan government was taken over by the Taliban. Speaking of the Taliban, I’m wearing my Bowe Bergdahl bracelet because he was captured by the Taliban last year, but back to the story. Al Qaeda, which I did a blog on earlier in the year, was a group ran by the Taliban, bad people. On September 11, 2001, four planes were hijacked and two flown into the Twin Towers resulting in almost 3,000 deaths. Another plane crashed into the Pentagon that same day as well and outside of Washington D.C. another plane crashed down into a field supposedly headed for the White House. We went to war on September 20 and the military declared a War on Terror. NATO, which Ben presented and talked about briefly, ha, decided what they needed to do and 9/11 was an attack. We invaded Afghanistan and Al Qaeda groups hid Saddam Hussein who was thought to plan all of this, and he did.

Invasion of Iraq-2003

After the Taliban had been defeated in 2001, Bush decided to try to eliminate terrorist threats before they could be pushed through. Iraq, Iran, and North Korea were accused of being an “axis of evil”, according to Bush. Britain and the U.S. were really wanting war against Iraq, but there were some disputes. Britain wasn’t so sure they could go through with it because of being in the United Nations. Saddam refused Bush’s nicely offered ultimatum and on March 19, 2003, the United States began an air strike on Iraq. I really did not know any to all of it was going on. Maybe I just don’t remember 2003 very well. Ground strikes were on mainly Baghdad and oil fields. The military and government of Iraq failed very quickly and the United Nations held control of a lot of Iraqi cities. On May 1, 2003, Bush decided we were victorious against Iraq. Hussein was captured in 2004, which I never knew, and I never knew he was hung in 2006.
