Thomas Jefferson was the third president of the United States. He was a leading figure in America's movement toward independence as a nation. Jefferson was a tall man with red hair. He was from central Virginia where he became a leading lawyer and plantation owner. During the American Revolution he rose to a position of leadership in both his state and the nation. Known most for being the author of the Declaration of Independence. After the Americans won independence from Great Britain , Jefferson retired in 1809 after eight years as president. He was president of the United States from 1801 to 1809.In addition to his two terms as president, Jefferson served as a member of the Virginia legislature, a delegate to the Continental Congress, governor of Virginia, U.S. minister to France, U.S. secretary of state, and vice president of the United States. He was also a supporter of the arts, sciences, and education.
