January 23th- presentation day

* Economy and strikes

- the age of invention, there was mass productions

-tremendous prosperity

-mass- consumption economy

-depression for farmers.

-stock market: financial instruments, building wealth, raise money for expansion(go public), fraction of total ownership, open bidding, company supply and demand.

- buying on credit: to buy things and pay them later

- tariffs: tax on imported goods, more options, protected businesses

-many strikes:

+Boston police- 1919, the Boston police wanted to form a union but they weren't allowed so, they went on strike and stopped working. some college students at Harvard volunteer to try and stop the trouble that were going on on the streets while the police men weren't working. more than 1,000 police officers lost their jobs and never recovered.

+US steel- 1919,  more than 350,000 workers went on strikes for better wages and working conditions. the National guard were called in to help control the strikes. 

-American federation of labor- still the largest workers union.

+united mine workers- 1902, Profits were low and the conditions weren't the best. they wanted more pay, an shorter hours. there was two kind of coal being worked on bituminous and anthracite.

*an other one happened in  1919

*Red scare

RS- America's fear of communists, socialists and immigrants were going to take over America's government. Fear started to rise when people found out about spies selling U.S. government's secrets to the soviets.

what caused it- The Bolshevik Revolution was taking place(immigrants from Russia were going to come in America)

Attorney General Palmer, took the law into his own hands and started raiding homes, clubs, union halls, and coffee shops.

*Palmer had his house bombed which resulted in this fear of his.

It resulted in 5,000 people held in jail, not allowed to call anyone, and were treated terribly.

Most of the people deported did nothing wrong.

America didn't want any immigrants in the U.S. so, they created anti- immigration acts.

- Anti-immigrants acts

immigration act of 1917- people from the Eastern Asia and Europe were forbidden to come to the U.S.

immigration act of 1921- Limited the number of immigrants that came to the U.S.

immigration act of 1924- Made each person that came into the U.S. pay for a visa, which was $9-10

These acts made less and less people come to America.

- Sacco and Vanzetti case

Two men that were immigrants robbed Slater and Morrill shoe factory and killed Frederick Parmenter (payroll clerk) and Alessandro Berardelli (security guard)

They didn't find any evidence of them doing it but they just needed someone to take the blame so why not immigrants  that were anarchists?! they lost their lives.

Harlem Renaissance/ KKK

It was a cultural, social, artistic time for the African Americans/Africans

It took place at the end of WWI

Writers, Artists, Musicians, photographers, scholars.

most of the people moved from the south to find their place and a place to express their talents. It is also known as the great migration.

*KKK

it's a hate group that started originally in march 3 of 1866 in the Southern United States. They hated on African Americans, Catholics, jews and, immigrants.

they were after something called "white power" and often committed violent acts, such as killing people.

Warren G. Harding- 29th president, senator of Ohio

return to normalcy.

child welfare, unemployment, bill with African Americans (stopping violence)

James M. cox- governor

newspaper publisher, domestic issues, fought for a lower income tax and women's rights

happened in Wyoming

(bribery) was a rock formation on the land holding oil, owned by the government

Calvin Coolidge- 30 president

* The automobile(cars)

- the model t

cheap so that everyone could afford ($250)= ($3,128)

sold in every colour as long as it was black

Tin Lizzie( nickname for the Model T)

the model T had 20 horse power

*The electricity- homes and news appliances 

first discovered 600 B.C. (static electricity)

Thomas Edison created the first long lasting and reliable light bulb but did NOT create the first light bulb

Inventions made possible by electricity

- vacuum cleaners

-refrigerators

-washing machines

in 1924 2/3 of american houses used electricity and 1/2 of refrigerators sold were electric.

January 27- Presentation day

*airplane

the first airplane flight was in 1903 by the wright brothers

in the 1920s airplane shows were famous

they weren't really used to travel they were more used for shows and fun

Amelia Earhart

she was the first woman pilot to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean, and was only the 16th woman issues a pilot license

she tried to fly the pacific Ocean but got lost and got declared dead.

Charles Lindbergh 

Charles was the first pilot to fly across the Atlantic ocean solo and non stop

the trip from new York to Paris took 33.5 hours

he was a pilot in the army and was the best in his class then flew mail from st. Lewis to Chicago.

*Scopes-monkey trial

the scopes monkey trial was a trial of creationism vs evolution

creationism- the bible

evolution- the formation of how one thing becomes an other

- John Thomas Scopes

he was a high school teacher and a football coach.

he broke the Tennessee butler act which basically  which basically stopped people from teaching about evolution.

- American Civil Liberties Union

They placed an ad inviting a teacher to help test the laws in courts

The trial happened in Clarence Darrow

during the trial the Tennessee act got destroyed and professionals scientists were allowed to test laws.
