Monday-Presentations

Women's rights part 2-The major role of women remained as a house wife. The number of working women 25% as a result of the work. Roles included factory workers, secretaries, salesclerks and telephone operators. The number of women attending college rose by 10%. They were able to vote,a d they wanted to be equal to men, WHICH THEY GOT!! Margaret Sanger founded the American Birth Control League (planed parent hood.) Alice Paul stood for women and all their rights and encouraged women to fight. 

Economy and strikes-age of invention, mass productions, tremendous prosperity, mass consumption economy, depression of farmers. Stock Markets(parts of company)-financial instruments, building wealth, raise money for expansion(go public), fraction of total ownership, open bidding, company supply and demand. Buying on credit(pay later)-mostly on cars. Tariff(tax on imported goods)- more options, protected businesses. Strikes-Boston Police strike, US steel, United Mine Workers. Boston Police strike-form unions, Harvard and faculty volunteers, militia, Calvin Coolidge, to gain higher wages to adjust for war time inflation more than 1,100 officers, riots, no recovery, many men were fired. Steel strike-more than 350,000, wartime production needs, inflation, Midwest from September 1919 to January 1920, American Federation of Labor, National Guard, Ohio, Political advancements. United Mine Workers-Profits were low, bituminous and anthracite, Theodore Roosevelt, more pay(shorter hours), took place in May 12th, 1902.

Tuesday-I present the Red Scare.

Harlem Renaissance/KKK-Cultural, social, artistic, took place at the end of World War 1(rebirth of African American entertainment).  Types of people-Writers, artists, musicians, photographers, scholars. From the south, the expressed their talents freely and moved across the country. People-Langston Hughes(poet), Louis Armstrong(famous jazz musician.)KKK-Hate group, hated African Americans, Catholics, Jews and Immigrants. Today there are 5,000 and 8,000 KKK members. They were white and the leaders wear red. 

Wednesday-Politics-Republican candidate in 1920 Warren G. Harding. 29th president, Senator, Ohio, "Return to Normalcy", Energetic strategy, "America First", Child welfare, unemployment, bill with African Americans. Democrat candidate-James M. Cox. Governor, newspaper publisher, domestic issues, fights(women's rights.) Teapot Dome Scandal- Oil, rock formation, Wyoming, Bribery. Candidate of 1924, Calvin Coolidge-30th president, lawyer, Vermont, Governor of Massachusetts, modernized corruption, taxes, Indian Citizen act. Other candidate of 1924, John W. Davis, American Politician, Was a U.S. rep representative, Ambassador of Great Britain, Seized national steel mills. Candidate of 1928, Herbert C. Hoover-31st president, failed to recognize, mining engineer, Iowa, Lead economic recovery, advocated stronger labor laws. Other candidate, Alfred E. Smith-Speaker, Urban, Leader of PM, anti-Prohibition, and a catholic man. Normalcy-other countries, agreements, peace and order. Trickle down theory-gain tax breakers, other financial business, helps economy grow. Rugged individualism-all individualism should pull own weight. Laissez-Faire- Idea/concept of letting things take their own course. 

Thursday-Presentations

The Automobile-The model T-ford, every mans car, cheap($250=$3,128 today) 45 mph, only black, 15,000,000 million were sold,  20 horse power, 10 gallon tank, hand crank start, weighed 1200 lbs, 1/2 the weight of today's cars, tin Lizzie(nickname for the car). General motors-($680=$8,686 today), GM should offer not cheaper cars but better quality cars, rounder body and shorter roofs, variety of colors. Chrysler-($995=#12,199 today), 70 mph, started the hydraulic breaks, replaceable oil filter, rubber engine mount, contoured glass, electric start. buying on credit let people pay for cars. One of the most impacted inventions.

Electricity(homes and new appliances)-Thomas Edison made the first electrical light bulb that was long lasting and reliable. Inventions-vacuums, refrigerators, and washing machines. Electricity was in 2/3 of homes in 1924. 1/2 of the refrigerators sold were electric. Over the years more and more electricity was available to more people. Washing machine-($81.50=$250-$2,000 today) Vacuum-($28.95-$50-$900 today) Today we have toasters, advanced refrigerators, microwaves, advanced washing and drying machine, ovens. 

Friday-Presentations

Airplanes-The first air plane flight was in 1903 by the wright brothers. In the 1920's airplanes became more popular and were used as transportation, shipping, and entertainment. Used in World War One, for the first time in battle. In the 1920's airplane shows were famous, a lot of people would stand on the wings during flight. Entertainment was one of the more popular uses of the plane. Amelia Earhart- First female pilot to fly sol across the Atlantic Ocean. She mysteriously disappeared. She was the 16th woman issued a pilots license. She was legally declared dead in 1939. Charles Lindbergh- Charles was the first pilot to fly across the Atlantic Ocean solo and non-stop. The trip from New York to Paris took 33.5 hours. He was a pilot in the army was the best in his class then flew mail from St. Lewis to Chicago. Most popular man in the 20's. 

Scopes Monkey Trial-It was a trial creationism vs. evolution. Creationism-the belief that the universe and living organisms originate from specific acts of a divine creation. Evolution- The process by which different kinds of living organisms are thought to have developed and differed from earlier forms during the history of the earth. John Thomas Scopes- high school teacher and a football coach. He started teaching evolution and he wasn't supposed to. Butler Act- banned from teaching evolution. American Civil liberties union-ad inviting a teacher to help test the law in the courts. Clarence Darrow- defended John in the trial, he was to face off against William Jennings Bryan. Judge Raulston destroyed the defenses strategy, he ruled that expert scientific testimony on evolution was inadmissible. Darrow had a plan, called Bryan to the stand as an expert witness on the bible, Bryan was humiliated. made up answers for the crowd. Scopes was fined $100 fine and creationism won over evolution.
