Wednesday: a recap of presentation, the plane- Charles Lindbergh: first person to fly across the Atlantic Ocean, flew from new york to Paris, flew in his monoplane-the spirit of st. Louis, the flight lasted 33 1/2 hours, took off from Long island's Roosevelt field-may 20 1927-landed in Paris Le Bourget airfield May 21, 1927- a crowd of 150,000 gathered to watch the historical event- donated the plane to Smithsonian Institution in 1929, now at national air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C. - baby was kidnapped a huge news story, - was an isolationist(isolating self/U.S. from others) leading up to WWII, voice for America First committee, group was anti-semitic(prejudice against Jews), pro-fascist rhetoric, lead people to think he was a Nazi sympathizer, flew many combat missions for U.S- Amelia Earhart: was nurse for Red Cross, started flying lessons in January of 1921, bought "The Canary" second hand Kinner Airster, in 1922 she was first women to fly above 14,000 ft, first woman to fly across Atlantic in 1932, May 20 flew from Newfoundland, Canada, a day later in field near Londonderry, Northern Ireland- first person to fly solo from Hawaii to u.s. mainland in 1935, awarded the distinguished flying cross by the Congress of U.S, flew nonstop across the U.S. during an attempt to circumnavigate the globe, she disappeared, flew with a navigator named Fred Noonan, the plane was never found, declared lost at sea- video
Thursday: presentation, entertainment (partial me) - horror, comedy, radio was first called the sound factory, games, American mahjong, billy whiskers, Marseilles chess, ouija, marbles, jacks, house, foods, baby ruth etc, sports, boxing basketball, etc, famous athletes, George Herman Ruth, Joe Lewis, Harlem blog trotters(team), scopes trial/monkey trial, evolutionism vs creationism- illegal to teach evolutionism, Butler Act, ACL, John Scopes convicted, William Jennings Bryan presented prosecution, Clarence Darrow defended Scopes, trial set for July 10th, circus like-atmosphere/selling things/rides, ending draw (but today evolution), Butler Act stopped in 1967
