  • Teapot Dome- Scandal 
    • A rock formation in Wyoming 
    • The US Navy had this land for their oil reserves
    • Albert Fall (Secretary of Interior) took bribes from oil companies and sold land that he shouldn't have sold land to
    • Fall leased the land that the Navy had oil under and sold it to two oil companies
    • He took bribes from these two companies, which is why it is illegal
    • Fall became very rich after this
      • This all happened under Harding

    • GDP- Total amount of good and products produced by a country within a year
      • 20's had a climbing number of GDP's
    • GDP Per capita- Amount per person produced 
      • Made about $5,500 per year

    • Stock Market was booming (buying on margin)

    • The 10 Largest companies in the United States

  • High Tariff Policy
    • Tariff is a tax on imported goods
    • Progressives wanted to lower tariffs because it raise competition
    • Republicans raise tariffs because they won't buy goods from other countries

  • Warren Harding
    • Known for having alcohol in the White House when the Prohibition was in effect
    • Sneaking girls in the White House
    • Wanted to "return to normalcy" which is the way things were before the war, isolation, focus on America
    • Born in Ohio
    • Died of disease as president , so his Vice President (Coolidge) became president
  • Calvin Coolidge
    • Nicknamed "Cool Cal" or "Silent Cal"
    • Wanted the government to be less involved in people's lives 
  • Herbert Hoover
    • Took the oath of office in March of 1929
    • From West Branch, Iowa
    • President at the time of the Stock Market Crash of the Great Depression

      • Father of Communism

    • Militaristic, take away rights, rule through fear and intimidation, have to praise their leader

      • Severely restricted the immigration of Africans and prohibited the immigration of Arabs, East Asians, and Indians
      • The Purpose of the act was "to preserve the ideal of American homogeneity"

  • Scopes Monkey Trials
    • In 1925, Tennessee passed the first law making it illegal to teach evolution in school
    • The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) said it would defend any teacher willing to break the law
    • John Scopes, biology teacher from Dayton, accepted
    • Scopes taught evolution and was arrested
    • Clarence Darrow was hired by the ACLU to defend Scopes
    • William Jennings Bryan was the special prosecutor
    • Scopes did not deny teaching of evolution
    • Trial was really about evolution in schools
