Anyone that didn't like FDR's New Deal stood out from everyone else.
Father Charles E. Coughlin- radio priest from Detroit, turned against FDR, refused to nationalize the banking system and provided the free coinage of silver. Blamed the Great Depression on an international conspiracy of Jewish bankers. Later on, formed the National Union For Social Justice that reached a daily 40 million listeners/
Francis Townsend- doctor from Long Beach, California. Proposed the Old Age Revolving Pension, plan called for everyone over 60 to retire in order for jobs to open up jobs for the younger unemployed. Plan also said that anyone that agreed to it, would get $200, but would have to turn around and spend all of the money within a month.
Huey "The Kingfish" Long- US Senator of Louisiana. Convinced the legislature to put roads in the poorest parts of the states. 1934, started a movement called "Share Our Wealth". Long proposed a 100% tax on personal fortunes exceeding $1 million, elderly would receive pension, the poorest Americans were promised an estate worth no less than $5000 with a $2500 yearly minimum income guaranteed. Long made the Democrats worried that he might steal votes from FDR, but much to their relief Long was assassinated in 1935.
Charles Evans Hughes- Chief Justice of the Supreme Court during New Deal. Didn't like the idea of the "Court Packing" scheme. This scheme said that if anyone over 60 years old and failed to retire, a new justice added to the court.
