  • Stock- buying a part of a company
  • Stock market- place where people buy and sell stocks
  • New York Stock Exchange- Wall Street, New York City
  • Dow Jones- the 30 largest companies in the United States
    • if the Dow Jones is doing well, the entire stock market is usually doing well meaning the economy is usually doing well
  • Causes of the Stock Market Crash- 1929
    • Stock prices were grossly inflated, did not have real value-  watered stock prices
      • Companies were losing money, but the stock prices was going up (so something had to give) 
    • Over-speculation during the 1920's
      • Led to watered stock 
    • "Buying on margin"
      • Buying on margin=buying stocks on credit 
      • Led to people being in debt and watered stock prices
    • Overproduction of goods 
      • People had to be laid off because businesses were making more than they were selling
    • Uneven distribution of wealth 
    • Too much borrowing from banks
    • Federal Reserve increased interest rates 
      • If they lower interest rates, people will borrow money and spend more which helps the government 
      • If they raise interest rates, people will stop spending 
    • Lack of government regulation
      • No rules on the stock market
