18th amendment- the banning of alcohol

many people did not agree with this and wouldn't follow the law which lead to gangsters. Remember that OWNING or DRINKING alcohol wasn't prohibited. The banning of alcohol only lasted 13 years.
This lead to a black market for alcohol. Even thought people thought it would reduce crime, it actually increased it by 24%.

why was there prohibition? 4 main reasons

- it was wrong for society to enjoy alcohol while the men were fighting in war.
Gangsters
- a member of a criminal gang
- each city had their own major gangster but one of the most popular was Chicago AL Capone
Al Capone ( Scar-face)
-born in 1899
-Brooklyn, new York even thought he was from Italy.
-one of seven children and went to school until 6th grade but he beat up a teacher and was beat by the principal in return he dropped out.
- worked many jobs until he met Johnny Torrio who would beat up people who couldn't pay off their dept.
Later on got married to Mae Couglin and had a son named Albert Francis Capone.
The st. Valentine's day massacre in 1929
Torrio fled the country and Capone found himself in charge of bootlegging who would supply alcohol illegally.
President Hoover wanted to find a way to put Capone behind bars but they only caught him with a tax fraud.

Women's right and freedom
- the women were able to finally vote.
- they started to step out of their comfort zone.
- Harlem Renaissance.
- allowed all women to vote no matter of the colour.
- two group of women: "new women" and the traditionalists.
- the values of women in the home started to change and the started to be seen more in the work place.
- the 19th amendment allowed women to vote and it also had to do with how the women took the work of men during WWI.
- the men women could now drive, go to college, and go to work.
-they could now do what they wanted but the old generations considered them as "shame makers".

-The majority of the women remained in the traditional role of housewife.
- The number of working women increased by 25%
-the number of women attending college rose to 10% of population by the end of the 1920s
- The 19th amendment granted the right to vote to women.
-The women's rights movement.
- Reform of property laws, equal guardianship of children, new divorce laws, improved working conditions, higher wages, and access to higher education.
-Margaret Sanger: in 1921 she founded the America Birth Control league aiming to improve the lives of women and families. (Now known as planned parenthood services.)
- Alice Paul was the architect of some of the most outstanding political achievements on behalf of women in the 20th century. She dedicated her life to single cause of securing equal rights for all women.
