4. Entertainment- Fads-flag pole sitting(sitting on a flag pole), listening to radios, majong(women gambling), dancing, hat, pez dispensers. NFL-first meeting was held in Ohio. Uniforms were completely different. Basketball wasn't a big sport back then, it was put on the back burner. Uniforms were different, they had long socks, and short shorts, and knee pads. Dancing and music became a big thing. Women started to wear make-up. Women became more daring. Lots of slang terms.

1.Gangsters and prohibition- Prohibition-18th amendment(the banning of alcohol-selling, transporting and manufacturing) Can drink and own it. Many people were against it. Lead to a black market for alcohol. created more crime instead of reducing. Reasons why-entering the war and drinking alcohol was damaging american society. Boost the supply of grain. Consumption of alcohol was against god's will. People thought it was wrong to enjoy alcohol while men were at war. Gangsters-member of criminal gang, most famous was in Chicago(Al Capone). Al Capone-bullied as a child and dropped out of school when he was in 6th grade. He would beat up people that couldn't repay their loans. He got the nickname scar-face when he got a razor blade to the cheek in a fight. He moved to Chicago to avoid a murder charge. The he joined the five point gang and quickly moved up in rank. He began bootlegging. Seven members of a rival gang were shot and killed, he paid men to do this. President Hoover wanted to put Capone in jail. He was caught because he failed an income tax. He was sentenced 10 years of hard labor. He got syphilis(STD) and let him go and he spent the rest of his life in Florida. And died on January 25th, 1947. 

2.Women's rights and freedom- women in society has made a big step they had the right to vote. 3 groups(New women, traditionalist, older generation)New women- embraced new fashions and new ideas that challenged the traditional role of women. Traditionalist- feared the "new morality" era was threatening  family values and role of women in the home. 19th amendment was passed for women to vote. The women took roles of men during WW1.  Went to college and learned to drive and went to work. Flappers- changed the status of women by drinking and cutting their hair, listening to jazz, drinking and smoking in public, but they were not prostitutes.
