James Garfield

......James Garfield was born in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, 1831. He drove boat canals and eventually made enough money for an education. He graduated from Williams College in 1856. He was then a professor. A year later, he was the president. In 1862 he successfully led a brigade at Middle Creek, Kentucky. In 1862 Ohioans elected him to the congress but Lincoln got him to resign his commision as a general because it was harder to find an effective congress member than to find a major general.

......When he was president, he strengthened the Federal Authority over New York Custom's House. He was only president for about 6 months so there isn't a lot to say about him. During this time he dealt with a lot of patronage issues.

......James Garfield was shot in Washington, D.C. on July 2, 1881 by Charles Guiteau. He was about to go on summer vacation and had no guards with him. The bullet was lodged in his spine. He died 11 weeks later. He was the second of four presidents to be assassinated.

.....In my opinion it is just ridiculous that presidents get assassinated by strangers. No matter how terrible a president is, no one deserves death. The fact that he is a president trying to better our country makes it even worse. It is a very sad story and he only got less than a half a year in office. R.I.P Garfield. The first picture is the killer, Guiteau, and the second picture is former presient Garfield.
