Welll, technically this is not graded so I dont really have to do a good job cause it's just my notes. We dont have to do any more daily blogs. Mr. Bruns just said that we dont have to do questions 7 and 8 for our semester blog. I should probably start on that soon. Today is also Mr. Bruns' birthday. Then Shelie started her presentation. Mr. Bruns just told us that he got an IPAD for his brithday. That is crazy!!!!!!
~The Cold War and the Fall of Communism
-Lenin overthrew the Russian Provisional Goverment and changed Russia to communist. Europe was controlled by the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union was one of the largest communist organizations. Gorbachev became the leader in 1985 and he wanted to change it into more of a democracy. He couldnt fix the economy without changing the political and social structure. Perestoika means restructuring and Glasnost means openess. It means that like people are going to have more freedom of speech and to do things. They would hold a vote and they would have mulitple people run but they would all be communist.
In 1987 he started a new law that gave businesses full control of their business. The government used to control the businesses but now that they didnt, when the business would go bankrupt the government wouldnt bale them out, so a lot of business failed.
There were a lot of people that didnt want to change because they were stuggling and people didnt like it. At a time Gorbachev came out for a while because he was sick and there was a treaty that was being signed. Then when he came back he didnt want to be president anymore. They wanted to get rid of the KGB and the CPSU and related organizations. The people that were ranked high up in the communist government didnt want the change because they would lost their jobs.
~Then Lucas did his presentaion. He had Strategic Dedfense Initiative.
-It was an organization that was created by Reagan. It used space-based and ground-based systems to protect teh U.S. from nuclear missiles. The SDI was focused on the defense strategy instead of offensive. The SDI was set up in 1984 by the Defense department which overlooked the SDI. The X-ray lasers were used to detect missiles. It used energy from warheads to shoot down a lot of missiles in a short period of time. They used chemical lasers and it was one of the more sucessful SDI programs. The Rail Gun used a conductive pellet and shot down a rail by electric current. The Brillian Pebbles used mini-missiles powered by high velocity warheads. Reagan gave a Star Wars speech on March of 1983. It was critizided saying it would encourage the development of militarization. Russia wasnt happy about it because now that we have this SDI we could launch missiles and they would be able to stop it. It kind of started a space race. His speech was given the name star wars because it was said to be fiction and that it would be impossible to get lasers that would destroy a missile. In 2003 NMD was renamed to Ground-Base Midcouse Defense. In 2006 this system was operational with limited capibility. It was designed to intercept a small number of missiles.
Then Brandon did his presentation.
He had the new map of Europe.
Yugoslavia got split up because they were invaded by the Soviet Union.
