Major events that impacted their country between WWI and WWII.- Was not happy after WW1, because they think didn't get enough land. Joined the League of Nations (Organization set-up to prevent WW2). 5 Power Pact- Signed by Great Britain, US, Japan, France, Italy; all the countries agreed to limit the construction of battleships, cruisers and aircraft carriers. Countries found ways around the Pact. 9 Power Pact- Guaranteed Chinese Independence; Everyone should be able to trade freely with China. Kellogg-Briand Pact- countries pledged not to use war as a way to settle disputes. Italy invades Ethiopia in 1936 because; they wanted to undo a loss, and gain back Ethiopia land that they lost in 1896. By May 5th, 1936, Italy annexes Ethiopia by May 9th. Italy really tried to acquire land of AFRICA. Italy dropped out of the League of Nation in 1937. Countries quit trading with Italy after they invaded Ethiopia. Rome-Berlin Axis. Italy surrenders in 1943 and North Africa is free.

Discuss why they won or lost the war- Italy was not prepared militarily to fight a prolonged war (Germany constantly bailed Italy out of problems). Italian troops were spread to thin-Africa, Mediterranean, Albania, Greece, Soviet Union, France. Battle of Britain. The people of Italy were not prepared to fight or motivated to fight. They were forced to fight. Overall, Italy was just too weak of a country.

Discuss the impact WWII had on the country- the people that died, civilians were killed by the millions, spent $94 Billion, Italy joined the Allies in 1943 so the big concern for the US was making sure Italy became a democracy after the war and not fall to communism. US gave millions and millions of $$ to Italy (Marshall Plan) to help rebuild after the war. Became a member of NATO (The Alliance between US and Europe) in 1949. Became a member of the United Nations in 1955.
