Is "Cash for Clunkers" good?

Well there is a lot of talk about this plan called Cash for Clunkers, and apprently people can trade in cars that are still driveable and workable and get cars that get higher MPG than their older counterparts. This plan has boosted auto sales for General Motor's and Toyota's the most, but has boosted all auto sales by a considerable amount. President Obama and the democrats pushed very hard for this bill, and Republicans seem to dislike the bill. It was enacted acround the end of July.I do believe that it is wrong to spend more money than we have to. I mean if people wnt to trade in their cars, why should it be a better car for the enviroment? Shouldn't it be a choice for the consumer whether or not to make a switch to those kinds of automobiles? In my opinion, it is just another way that the government is trying to make us more European and less American.
