  • Liquor and beer seized under the volstead act
  • Banned sale transportation of alcohol beverages
  • 18th amendment- Supporters believed alcohol brought about corruption, crime, wife and child abuse, and accidents
  • The noble experiment
  • Alcohol was allowed for medical reasons 
  • Volstead act created by the prohibition bureau to enforce the law

why it failed

  1. people despised it. Saw it as government meddling in people's lives
  2. the prohibition bureau was underfunded
  3. cops even drank so they thought it was a dumb law to pass when nobody will follow it
  4. organized crime became commonplace

bootleggings

  • illegally making or distributing alcohol
  • people that made or transported alcohol 
  • named because people carried liquor in legs of botos
  • most important alcohol came in from canada, cuba, or the west indies

Speakeasies

  • to obtain alcohol illegally, people went underground to secret nars call
  • ( speak quietly)
  • they could be anywhere, they moved around
  • to be admitted a card or password had to be given

Organized crime

  • came about as a result of prohibition
  • every major city had its gang
  • al capone's bootlegging business in chicago made over 60 million a year
  • due to gang violence, only 19% of americans supported prohibition in 1929
