January 4th-8th

Tuesday - Today Mr. Bruns went over the class rules and expectations.

Wednesday -  In class today, we went over the intro quiz and we discussed the continents, oceans, and borders between continents. Mr. Bruns also mentioned there is an ocean that is showing up on more and more maps called the Southern Ocean (or Antarctic Ocean). We also talked about the US National debt, which is around 19 trillion and counting. It has doubled after George W. Bush's term.  We know that each US citizen would owe $58,388 dollars to break even on the countries debt. Medicare is insurance for the elderly. Medicaid is insurance for the poor.  ISIS stands for Islamic State in Iraq also referred as ISIL. Al Qaeda kicked out the ISIS group for being too radical.

Thursday - We also went over the candidates for the presidents of the United States. The front runners are currently Donald Trump and Hilary Clinton. Mr. Bruns assumes that Hilary Clinton will be the Democratic nominee and that Donald Trump has a good chance of being the Republican nominee, but the major conservative politicians aren't going to endorse him as the nominee. We also talked about countries with nuclear weapons which are: The United States, Russia, China, France, Great Britain, Israel, Pakistan, India, North Korea, and Iran. The United States have around 800 military bases in the world. North Korea we know have had nuclear weapons since 2006.

Friday - We went over the nuclear power of the world. The 5 original countries United States, France, Russia, China, and United Kingdom. United States has had 1054 tests and the last time we had a test was in 1992. We found out the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty caused the ban of nuclear tests above ground. We also found out how nuclear weapons are detonated below ground. The Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty occurred in 1968. 3 of the 4 countries that didn't sign the treaty, have nuclear weapons. What it did was prevent the spread and promotions of nuclear weapons. Countries that signed it, they're not supposed to make nuclear weapons, but they can use them for power. Today nuclear weapons are missile based, not bomb based. The next treaty was called the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty which was started in 1996. It was signed by Bill Clinton, but was not ratified by the Senate because it would damage the safety of nuclear weapons. The IAEA is a UK based organization to inspect nuclear weapons. The United Nation is a world organization that is trying to keep peace in the world. Security Council goals are to:  to maintain international peace and security; and to develop friendly relations among nations. There are 5 permanent members China, France, Russia, United States, and the UK.
