Arnim served in the German Army since he was 18 until the end of World War Two. He eventually worked his way up to command the elite 68th Infantry Regiment. He was eventually promoted as a major- general in 1938. He commanded divisions between the fighting against Poland and France. During the out-break of the war, he was again premoted to lieutenant general under Heinz Guderian. On November 1942, he was incharge of commanding of the 5th Panzer Army under Erwin Rommel. This is where Arnim made it to North Africa during the North African Campaign. Adolf Hitler premoted him to Generaloberst on December 4, 1942. He was pretty old at this time, 53 years old to be exact. Well, I guess thats not too old, only about 4 years older than my dad, I guess it just seems old. Old compared to me..

Arnim was captured by the British Indian Army on May 12, 1943. Arnim asked to speak with Eisenhower, and Eisenhower accepted and tried to get as much information out of him as possible. I'm kind of confused about this part, I guess I just dont really get it, but this whole part about Arnim asking to see Eisenhower.. thats what I dont get? Why would he want to talk to an enemy.. I can see why Eisenhower would, but why Arnim? Hans-Jürgen von Arnin spent the rest of World War 2 as a Brtiish prisoner of war in Britain. He was released back to Germany on July 1, 1947.
One thing I thought was interesting was that his actual car he drove during the North African Campaign is exhibited in Eastbourne Redoubt in the U.K. ![]()
