Everyday, children from other countries are brought to the United States and adopted, going on to recieve opportunites and love that they may not have otherwise. In that respect, the adoption system is an amazing blessing for countless children and adults, a glimmer of love and hope. It is a program that, if utilized properly and selflessly, can make our messed up world at least a little better. It can bring security and warmth to those children who never got the chance to be loved an accepted into a family. Its an amazing idea, usually just as amazing in practice. However, even Eden had its problems.
Recent reports are saying that through the span of the 36-year civil war in Guatamala, at least 333 children were stolen by the Guatamalan army and sold for adoption. That alone is terrible and twisted enough to infuriate a person. Unfortunatly, the corruption doesn't stop there. It is reported that in some cases, the children's parents were killed so they could be taken to government-run agencies. This is an example of a ghastly abuse of state, and a gargatuan injustice to those effected. The time span between 1977 and 1989 is being most heavily cited for these incidents, because of the fluctuation in adoption rates in the United States, Sweden, Italy, and France during those years. Investigators are extending their search through 1995, with the belief that even more people were taken. The finished report will be out next year, a full scan of the broken lives and false starts caused my selfish people.
Adoption has been a big form of income for Guatamala, but the war gave a huge abusers a huge opportunity. Yes, Guatamala is shrouded in extreme poverty. Does that justify though, killing a family and taking a child from the love of that family? Is the money gained worth the horrendous loss and pain?I read so many stories like this. So many that i almost become numb to all the pain out there; most people do. We can't though. We can't forget for a minute that the world is hurting, and love and peace is fading. We can't just sit and let the innocent suffer, while the guilty lay claim to success through terrible means. If we do, more cases reaching above and beyond the severity of this one will continue to happen. More lives will be ruined and more children will be hurt. Slowly, we'll loose that beautiful kindness that makes us so very human.
