Giant Rats

There was a new giant rat species found in the rainforest of Papua New Guinea. It is 32 centimeeters from head to tail and weighs about 3.3 pounds. It is said to belong to the muridae family. The muridea family is the largest living species of rodents. The people who found this new rat was by the BBC Natural History Unit. It was found inside the crater of mount Bosavi.

A species close to this one was found in Foja Mountains in 2007. Species are found alot in this region they have found many animals such as frogs, fish, and bats. They find these most all of these animals in craters that are about 3 kilometers. The animals go in there because that is the place where their enimies dont go becasue its to hard to get in and out of the crater.

This is not the largest species of rats found though. Capybaras are the largest and they look more like hairy pigs than rats where this new one that was found is the size of about a cat. There are lots of teams out in the rainforest looking for new species
