Major events that impacted their country between WWI and WWII -

  • Soviets raped women in Germany
  • October 15th- Hermann Goring committed suicide two hours before his scheduled execution (Head of the German Air Force)
  • Treaty of Versailles- Lost a lot of land to Czechoslovakia, Poland, Lithuania, Denmark, Belgium, and France. Hitler tried to get Germans BACK INTO Germany.
  • Germany's army was downsized to NO tanks, NO air force, NO submarines, and only 100,000 men.
  • Germany dropped out of the League of Nations, and Hitler rebuilt the army by training 100,000 men, putting them in reserves, then training another 100,000 men.
  • The Rhineland was made into a NO MILITARY ZONE. (DMZ) No German soldiers or weapons in this area.
  • People of Germany were VERY angry against the Treaty of Versailles. Germans felt the treaty was being "forced down their throats", by their own government. People blame the "November Criminals" (The Weimer Republic) for accepting the treaty.
  • Nazis believed in the Dolchstoss Theory (Stab in the Back Theory)
  • The Weimer Republic- The NEW government, Democratic, Set up after WW1, signed the Treaty of Versailles, Hitler didn't like them, tried to overthrow them (failed, put in prison), The same government that allowed Hitler to become a Chancellor.
  • Hitler came to power by using the Democratic Process to come to power.
  • People hated Jews for; being in charge of banks, killing Christ, being greedy, being in charge of Hollywood
  • Beer Hull Putsch in 1923, Hitler tried to overthrow the government; unsuccessful
  • Munich Conference 1938- Hitler was given the Sudetenland of Czechoslovakia, promised that's all he wanted, because he wanted to reunite German speaking peoples, Became known as the "Policy of Appeasement"
  • Hitler takes over ALL of Czechoslovakia in 1939; Czechoslovakia does not resist, Hitler takes over 2 countries, Austria & Czechoslovakia, before September of 1939 without using War
  • Soviet-German Non-Aggression Act; Russia gave raw materials to German for money and weapons, Both agreed to stay neutral if the other entered the war, Secretly agreed to invade and split Poland (German-Western, Soviet-Eastern), Russia would get Finland, Estonia and Latvia and Germany would get Lithuania.
  • People were shocked about the act, and Poland was scared, Hitler thought France and Great Britain would back out of helping Poland.
  • Blitzkrieg-Lightening War-Air-force attacks enemy front-line and rear positions, main roads, airfields, communication centers. At the same time infantry attacks on the entire front line and engages enemy.
  • Sitzkrieg-The Phony War-Germany was getting prepared to fight and waited out the winter, ends in Spring of 1940, Hitler invaded Luxemburg, Belgium, Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, and France by May-June of 1940.

how they came to power-

  • Hitler- President Paul Von Hindenburg dies shortly after Hitler dissolved the Weimer Republic, the government building was burned down and dismantled the Democratic Government. Hitler used the Democratic Process to come to power. Dropped out of the League of Nations and quit paying what Germany owed, starts rearming the German army, and rearmed the German Rhineland Area.
