In February of 2003, a conflict arose. The gov't of Sudan was accused of favoring Arabs over black Africans. The gov't denied favoring the Arabs, but they were supplying a militia called Janjaweed, which was made up of Arabs. The gov't was also accused of participating in attacks on civilians. Along with all of this, the gov't is also accused of tampering with things, like mass graves. Journalists have been arrrested, as to keep information from reaching the general public. I don't like genocide, and I don't see why people can't just get along. The US has described that the killing of African Muslims in Darfur is genocide. The UN did very little up until August 31st, '06, when they approved Resolution 1706, which placed UNAMID in Sudan. UNAMID stands for United Nations African Union Mission In Darfur. UNAMID was made up of 26,000 UN peacekeeping troops to aid a 7,000 troop African Union Mission in Sudan peacekeeping force. I'm glad that the UN finally decided to do something, but they could've acted a lot sooner. So Sudan didn't like the idea of UNAMID and said that they would refer to the UN peacekeepers as foreign invaders. The Sudanese military then made a launched a large offensive in the area the next day.On the 14th of July in 2008, ten charges of war crimes were filed against the president of Sudan by the prosecutor for the International Criminal Court. The charges were five counts of crimes against humanity, three counts of genocide, and two counts of murder. Almost a year later, on the fourth of March, 2009, an arrest warrant was issued for Omar al-Bashir, the president of Sudan. The warrant didn't include the three counts of genocide, because of lack of evidence. I think that trying to eliminate African Muslims fits under the description of genocide.Unfortunately, the US has not done anything effective to stop the war. What's worse is that we can't even arrest Omar al-Bashir. Sudan rejects the ICC's jurisdiction, but if he leaves the country, we can bag and tag him. Well, arrest him, but you know what I meant. The Sudanese gov't has stated that his plane will be surrounded by jet fighters, and he has traveled to Egypt and Qatar. Both of those countries refused to arrest him, and I don't see why they would do that. He made orders for the death of many many people, just because they were African Muslims.
