Gorbachev was president from 1990-1991. He was part f the Politburo and that is the highest you can get. Mikhail Suslov helped him. Perestrokia is Gorbachev's idea of economic, policital, and social restructuring. Glasnost is the policy of openess and freedom by Gorbachev in the 1980's and it gave people the freedom of speech. Gorbachev was the one who really helped end the cold war.
Reagan began as a democrat. He was the governor of California. He was president from 1981-1989. He didnt like communism at all.
The INF treaty was between the U.S. and Soviet Union. The reason for the treaty was to eliminate any shorter range misiles. It required the destruction of all U.S. and Soviet groung-launched ballistic and cruise missiles. In 3 years the U.S. eliminated 846 missiles. It was very effective.
After WWII Korea was split to north and south Korea. There was supposed to be an election and whoever won was supposed to unify the country. Both sides didnt like that cause they thought they were going to cheat. The election never happened. Then North Korea invaded South Korea. After the south got invaded they retaliated and the UN condemmed the norths attack. The UN security council decided to give arms support to the south.
There were two planes that we used for close air support. There were two more planes and they werent really that valuable. The U.S. leader was Harry Truman and General MacArthur who was the commander of the UN forces. MacAruthur started talking bad about Truman. Trumand didnt want to expand the war and MacArthur did so Truman fired him. Even thought the Cold War was over there was still tension between the US and the Soviets. The nothern half of Korea was communist and they were backed by the Soviet Union. The southern half was democratic and backed by the U.S. The Soviet Union invaded Korea which was controlled by Japan. The U.S. feared that the Soviet Union would take them over. The northern troops attacked at several points and they were heading south. The Soviets were pushing the south back farther. MacArthur ordered and invasion to push back. China warned the UN that they would react if we ever got to the Yalu River. Mao gave help to the Soviets becasue he thought that we were trying to take him over. China thought that we would take over Korea and go to war with them.
The war ended in 1953 but we still have troops over there today. Operation Glory was used to allow countries to exchange their dead. Eisenhower went to Korea to figure out how to end the war. The UN accepted the Korean armstice. The aggreement was negotiated for two years before it was signed. They signed a ceasefire but they never signed a treaty.
