Today we had the class period to work on our powerpoint presentations which will be due on Tuesday. During class, Madison and I met with Mr. Bruns to talk about our main points we will be covering in our projects. I also researched about some of the first reformers who helped poor people living in urban areas. One program was called the Social Gospel Movement who preached salvation to the poor. This led to more reformers giving up their time to help needy people living in the slum urban conditions of the late 1800's. Some of these reformers set up settlement houses which were community centers that provided help to the people in the area, mostly immigrants who came to the U.S. seeking a better life. These houses were mainly run by women with a college education who could teach people about English, health, painting, and other cultural and social services. By 1910, 400 of these settlement homes had been opened up all across the country, even one founded just for African Americans in Hampton, Virginia.
