Today people are taking tests, and I took mine.Through the "Golden Door"Millions of people immigrated to the United States because they thought they would have a better life. Also, some came because of famine, religious or political persecution, and land shortages. Some people came to earn money and then move back to their home. A lot of the immigrants came from Europe. Chinese came to the west coast.Immigration StationsMost of the immigrants went to New York to Ellis Island. Immigrants had to pass a doctor's examination. They were questioned and documents were checked. Around 17 million immigrants passed through Ellis Island between 1892-1924. Angel Island was known as "The Ellis Island of the West". Around one million immigrants passed through Angel Island. Most of these immigrants were Chinese. Immigrants were questioned and kept in a filthy building why waiting to find out if they were going to be let in or not.NativismNativism was the favoritism toward native-born Americans. Nativists objected to immigration, but allowed some from certain countries. These countries were Great Britain, Germany, and Scandinavia. They did not like immigrants from Asia. They also did not like most of their religious beliefs. Many of the nativists were Protestant and thought that Roman Catholic and Jewish immigrants would destroy the social order that the Protestant founders created.Chinese Exclusion ActAlso, people were worried that the Chinese would take jobs from natives because they would work for less pay. This act forbid the entry of Chinese to America. Students, tourists, government officials, teachers, and merchants were the only Chinese allowed in. This law wasn't repealed until 1943.These are things that I will put in my presentation for my section.
