Ch. 8.4 The Dawn of Mass Culture-During the 19th century, people began enjoying things and cities were made to look better. Amusement parks were built in cities, and grass lots were set aside for parks. Coney Island is in Brooklyn, New York, became a beach resort. It had many attractions, good and bad, such as amusement parks, horse racing, casinos and prostitution.In 1885, the first bicycle was built, and at first it was a male only hobby, but women quickly got into it. Coca-Cola was created in 1885 by John Pemberton as a wine, and then remade to be non-alcoholic. It was first sold in pharmacies in Atlanta.Boxing became very popular, and people listened to it on the radio. Also, baseball became popular, and people started going to games to watch. Professional teams started in the 1870’s.Department stores became popular, as well as chain stores. Advertisements began to appear more often. Mark Twain’s pieces of works became more popular and newspapers started in small towns as well as bigger cities. Dime novels were popular as well, which as the name states, sold for a dime.Explain what people did for entertainment in the late 1800's and early 1900's.-sports (baseball, tennis, boxing), amusement parks, reading, bicycling, going to department stores, going to places like Coney Island, and horse racing.
