I was gone on Friday for student council. I have read Jenna and Jessica's summary blog, and have taken notes that I would need from there.Gov't Supports AssimilationThe Dawes Act gave land to individual Native Americans. By 1932, two thirds of Native American's land was taken away in the Great Plains. Buffalos were wiped out from 65 million to 1,000 in 90 years. Buffalos were safe at Yellowstone, which created the park.Cattle became more proftibale and and cowboys worked 10-14 hour days. Long drive is physically moving cattle from Texas to Kansas area, where railroads were. People had around 250-300 cattle per person. Herding became less necessary, and cattle was put into feedlots. People made smaller, beefier herds.QUESTIONS I NEED TO KNOW-Describe Native American culture.-Why did settlers/people move to the Great Plains?-Do did the US gov't deal with Native Americans in the mid to late 1800's? What were their policies?-Describe a cowboy's life.Chapter 5, Section 2Settling the Great Plains-Jamestown was the first settlement.-Gov't gave land grants to railroads. The Homestead Act gave anyone in the U.S. the right to file for an application to get 160 free acres of land in the West. People in the Rockies cheated by taking land and not allowing anyone else.Protecting the FrontierHenry Washburn surveyed the North Western portion of Wyoming, obsorbed the natural beauty of land
