The war goals of the U.S. were to secure full indepenedence for Cuba. But the Teller Amendment said U.S. would not take over Cuba when the war was over. When Cubans started revolution, U.S. declared neutrality. Cubans wanted U.S. support. Propaganda campaign led by Cuban Jose Marti. They brought arms and ammunition from U.S. which they smuggled into Cuba. One of the causes of the Spanish- American War was destruction of American property in Cuba. We believe that Spain was destroying the sugar plantations. The main reason for the war was the sinking of the USS Maine. General Valeriano Weyler put thousands of Cubans into concentration camps from diseases and such. The Yellowpress made it look like he was butchering the people. He was then called "the Butcher" by the Yellowpress. They were the first newspapers who tried to spread the truth. They were also another cause of the war. They tried to make it look like Spain was doing all these horrible things. They wanted to start the war so they had something to talk about in their paper, they were imperialists. The Yellowpress got the name "yellow" from a cartoon of a child that was colored with yellow that came out during this time period.President Mickinly was the president during the war. Enrique Dupay de Lome wrote a letter that was given to the YellowPress. He was the Spanish Ambassador to the U.S. He said Mickinly gave into what people wanted. The USS Maine was sent to the harbor in Havana, Cuba. It was sent there to protect American property. They all believed that Spain did this. 258 soldiers died on this attack. They actually believe that it was an internal accident. Jingoism is extreme patriosism. Many believed jingoes pressured McKinley to declare war. But he wanted to stay out of the war.
