Today in class Mr. Bruns went over some things that people may have missed in their blogs. I learned that the progressive era brought a lot of change to our country. One of the four major goals of the progressive era were protecting social welfare. This helped people that were poor. It set up settlement houses for poor, opened libraries, sponsored education classes, set up soup kitchens, and tried to help the slum brigades. Another goal was to promote moral improvement. Examples of this was prohibition and things like Carrie A. Nation. Another goal was creating economic reforms. The rich dominated society. There was a major unbalance income and how people lived. Socialist despised capitalism. Socialist thought that people were to be fair. The interstate commerce commition came in to regulate railroads. Muckrakers played a big role into bringing reform. There were investigative journalists and exposed the problems of society. Another goal was to foster efficiency. This means that people would try to save time by doing things faster. Henry Ford paid there workers about $5 a day. (About 50 cents a hour) This made workers really happy with resulted in better efficiency. To make our country more democratic progressives had democratic help out immigrants and sort of "bribe" them. The secret ballot had to do with this. This means that whoever you were voting for can be a secret. This really helped make our country more democratic.I think that it was really important for progressives to have so many major goals on fixing things for our country.
