Today Mr. Bruns went over the parts that we missed in the presentations.Protecting social welfare: They set up settlement houses for poor and opened libraries. They sponsered education casses and opened swimming pools. They also set up soup kitchens, they had a group called slum brigades and they taught immigrants.There was a major unbalance in income and how people lived, the rich dominated. Most of the people were poor and lived on the streets or in bad homes. Many people turned to socalism. It's when the government wanted everyone to be equal. Socialist said it should be balanced among everyone. The innerstate commerce commition came along to regulate railroads. Muckrakers were investigative journalists who exposed the negative affects of the society.16. What did businesses do to bring better efficiency to their business?Fredrick Taylor studied time management. He helped bring about the assembly line. The assembly line allowed mass production of goods but it also made it boring so not alot of people wanted to work there. Henry Ford paid people 5 dollars a day in his factory. People work harder when they're being paid more. He decided to pay the better because eventually they'll buy his products when they earn enough money and it'll be better for his company.18. What did local and state government do to reform itself during the Progressive Era?5. What did progressives do to make our country more democratic?They held secret ballots. The secret ballot was a ballot that was secret. They made our country more democratic because people could vote for whoever they wanted without feeling stupid about it. Initiative allows people to start a bill, it gives the power to the people. Referendum is the actual voting on things. Recall is a state level thing. If the government is doing a terrible job, the people of the state could force an election before the real ballot is supposed to be. Direct primaries became more common. Before the primaries they picked people for president that would be for rich, white males. The people selected the direct election of US senetors.
